I have been quite pleasantly surprised by the offspring of the current generation work toward Birchen Rosecomb, I finally had a cockerel from last fall with good color and lobes but only a decent comb, I placed him over a few females from a back cross to Black again and have four young birds...

Charlie has some great BB Reds, that is where we started with them as well. I also acquired a few blacks and splash from her, blacks from another source, and worked the last few years toward Birchen and Silver Blue. I finally have a respectable Birchen Male and a Silver Blue Male, as well as a...

Good looking Brassy and BB Charlie. They are coming along very well. I am looking forward to the Birchen, Silver Blue, and Brown Red next year as well as Columbian which is a much bigger chore. I expect to have showable Birchen Males and females for next fall.

I will keep a good cock as a breeder so long as he does his job well, I have one who is passing the 9 yr mark this year I don't get many good fertile months out of him but what I do get is always worth keeping and feeding. I often just set the best cockerel of the year aside just incase...

That is one good looking cock bird. I do not plan to hatch or raise many Black or Blue this coming year, The Birchen I have been working toward should pan out next year with the last generation coming out with good heads, combs, spikes, body and feather so far. They will be late for hatching...

The Birchen Cockerel was bred from F1 birds that were the result of three of your hens and a Birchen OE cock. That one is an F2 Bird, I bred him back to three hens that came from you to improve type, tail, comb, head, and lobe. I have about 15 pullets from that mating coming up now. I also have...

Here is a quick pic of a birchen project cockerel. He has been mated back to Black already for the next generation of breeders to improve comb and earlobe. I have two of his younger brothers with decent earlobes but good combs to go back over the pullets from that mating.

I believe they are discussing the near Quail colored cockrell, he is clearly split for single comb based on comb structure and is quite likely a OE cross either intentional or not. The cross with the rosecomb and single comb typically results in the spike becoming nearer a blade in the males it...

Charlie, as we discusses here is one of the Birchen F1 malesnot quite finished and not in the best condition but has a purpose other than being shown off. I kept 4 cockrells and 32 pullets and have plans to put as many as I can hatch on the ground to get somewhere quickly. I have one cockrell...

The Birchens are taking longer to get enough color in for a decent photo, will likely be a few more weeks when the cockrells begin set in wing bow and sadlle feathers.

Not bad looking birds at all, give them a bit more time to finish out the male needs to molt out the tail and get back in good feather the female may likely pose better than in the photo but looks to be young so a good start.. Good head and comb structure, good body structure, nice feather...
