I agree...the age difference is minimal with Silkies....heck, I hatched out a bunch of chicks last winter and had a Silkie pullet and cockerel in the brooder, about 5 months old at the time. I gave them the chicks to raise, and they did an amazing job. Never picked or bullied the babies, but...
I only have blue and black myself, but any are good.
At that price, get several! Broody Silkie mamas are the BEST! Unfortuantely, sexing young Silkies is very, very hard.
$10/chick is actually reasonable for a Silkie. I've paid anywhere from $5 (pet quality) on up, and a good show bird will cost you a pile of money.
ETA: my SFH chicks cost me over $20 when you add in shipping, and there is always a minimum. Each shipment costs me about $200 or so.
How far are you from Frederick MD? I am not far from there. I think Charlestown isn't too far from here either. I could either bring you a chick or two or you could let yours grow up with mine if that isn't a horrible haul. I work tomorrow but would be free Sunday afternoon.
Yep. Sorry...carryover from my days as an Arabian horse breeder. We indicated purebred or not as PB or HA (half Arabian), and it is useful with purebred birds too.
I don't even bother with shipped eggs any longer. I have wasted so much money on shipped eggs....for 10 dozen SFH at $50 a pop....yeah.... Other breeds have done better for me, but even then, I'm not a fan of spending $35 for maybe 2 chicks when I can order a dozen chicks for $100 or so and have...
I gave SoManyHats 4 bantam eggs. In that coop, I have a Silkie hen and a Cochin hen. I also have a Silkie rooster and Cochin rooster. I was hoping it was a CochinxCochin egg, but they looked like Silkie eggs. Then I was hoping the daddy was at least the Cochin, but I think it is the Silkie...
Yep...do not count the gray/olive legged ones....those are your EE/blue egg layers. SFH only have yellow legs. RSL have yellow legs.
I don't know about the color being an indicator....so I'd band those ones and see. Now we need to figure out which one is your PB SFH...
X2.
This is why I kind of think my bantam Cochin roo isn't doing his job....those look like PB Silkies from the photo, but hard to tell. My Silkes do carry vaulting in their lines, so that is where that comes from. I'm not thrilled with the amount of color leakage and comb configuration in my...
The RSL x SFH babies are adorable! Those are the little blondes and strawberry blondes with ****yellow*** legs. One of them is also the PB SFH....I would suspect one of the blonde ones, as I have a sibling here (smallish brown egg) and it is a blonde chick. The color will change dramatically...
That IS good! I'm on the right track for flock health and maintenance if their chicks had a 100% hatch rate!
The three that did not hatch here were because I should not have even set them. Breeding crested SFH roosters and crested SFH hens leads to a very high percentage of vaulted skulls in...
Exacfly. I've used a bandaid, trapping the foot in a normal position with the sticky ends, trimming off the non sticky part, and they do just fine. I have one hen out there I did as a chick and you can't tell...and she is the boss hen of ALL my flocks!
