This coop is a great design. I have one suggestion; Change out your roosts to a wider board, 2x4's allow the chickens to sit on their feet, keeping them warmer in winter. otherwise, cool design.

I can't seem to post the pictures, they are too big? I used duck cloth to make the hammock, but it takes so much time to dry, that next time I'll use sunbrella fabric, some people just use a tarp. I did not use a tarp because I think it's too slick to use a plastic tarp. There are pictures if...

While I loved my poop deck for less than 10 chickens, I switch this spring to a ladder style roost with a poop hammock. I just sprinkle a 1/2C of pdz and lift out to empty once a week. Since I have over 20+, it was a space issue. You can find pics on Pinterest. If you go with metal it will allow...

The pdz is 1 inch deep, the surrounding poop deck is almost 4 inches deep. Lowering the roost helped with how often they dusted there, but they still bathe in the pdz. It worked fine when we had 8 hens, but with 21 the space had to be reworked to allow that many to roost, and if that many dusted...

When winter comes you'll scrape. But , yes, you are quite correct and I used quite a deep poop deck to hold the pdz, between 3 and 4 inches. That way when you scoop and shake out the poop free PDZ it is still contained, and when the chickens decide to dust bath in the poop deck it stays where...

material hung under the roost to catch droppings.Mine is made to go under the highest roost of a 4 level roosting ladder to the other side of the lowest rung. Making a hammock shape, like a long sided U, we empty it once a week. Works great, haven't had it long enough to know how it will be in...

when I had poop boards instead of a poop hammock we used a plywood framed poop board. but I hear using the plastic lunch room type trays are easier to scrape clean. If you read thruogh these messages or do a seach on BYC you'll get the measurements you want.

No reason not to, the PDZ underneath the litter would probable work better to break the ammonia bond. I use the PDZ under the shavings in the donkey's stall. In the chicken coop I do DLM, and by keeping it stirred, twice a week, I have no problems.

My husband, added a 8 -10?inch board to the threshold. The floor is about 5 inches deep to begin and upwards of 12 to 18 by clean out time- 5 inches is the min. to prevent leg injuries. You control how deep it stays based on the amount of litter added/or subtracted. DLM is very like composting.

Check out the deep little method (DLM) and see if it will work for you. I rake mine a few times a week, depending on how often the girls rake. scoop out some litter to freshen as needed and replace with new. Twice a year, I do and complete removal, clean , repair, and replace to 4 or 5 inches. I...

My husband made a pulleys system of doubled plastic, 4mm I think, built a frame around the pulleys top and bottom attached with zip ties to a pole and inserted a pole to hold down the plastic. I can raise it in the day and lower it before it's night fall. the fame was to keep the wind from...

I so don't want to be a downer, but... In most of the summer your window placement should be fine--but in the rest of the time they should not allow a draft directly across the roosts at night. can you raise the roosts? or raise and/or lower the windows? if not leave them and add vent as high...
