Well, they sell them to me but at a seriously reduced price to cover their feed costs. A pure bred that wasn't a sport would cost me tons more :D They're otherwise SQ birds.
Yup. Spotty's pure, she's just WAY too spotted. The flock she comes from gets a few of them like that now and again and I have dibs on them when they're too spotted. :D
These two are going into my breeding program this spring (Ignore Amelia...she likes to photo bomb). Spot's on the right. She's a Speckled Sussex sport and likes to ride around on my shoulder. Her hatch brother 'Helgar' is next to her, but they're not actually related.
Alohas are a project strain being bred from the ground up by Sommer, a BYCer in Arizona. She's got a couple of website/blogs about them, plus a group on here :) They're still in the 'project' stage, but she started back before you could get Swedish Flower Hens in the US, as an All American...
I've resolved this by having a project breed to 'work' on (which happens to be Alohas) and a laying flock totally separate. The layer flock gets my 'odd balls' along with my steady layers and I don't have to worry about trying to breed the fun stuff :D The Alohas are beautiful, but at the moment...
Ahh, chicken math.
I added 3 new chicks to my batch, but I didn't hatch them. They WERE hatched NYD but it was more by incident than anything. Three adorable little Sicilian Buttercup chicks, and I'm hoping I have a roo and two pullets...from the behavior that's what I'm betting on. Two of...
I have a chicken color related question:
My two naked neck chicks are black, with sort of a 'penguin' light grey underbelly and white dots on the sides of their mouths. The ONLY hen I have that has grey feet (like these two) is a Dominant white who shows a lot of black 'splash'. These chicks...
It was a very simple design.
I made a template out of a piece of paper and shaped it like the letter 'D', so the flat edges were on the fold of the fabric. I cut it out, then cut out a hole in the middle. Then I just trimmed it to size on the chick, lightly sewed the back up across it's back...
Because it is. I've got it in a sling while I'm waiting to see if the treatment for a slipped hock 'takes' or not. The chick was otherwise eating, drinking, and trying to move, so we figured we'd reset the hock joint and cross our fingers. The sling lets it stand normally.
Welp, wound up with 6 chicks. One Heritage RIR, one RIR/Cochin mix, two Orpington/NN mixes, one 3/4th RIR-1/4 Brown Leghorn, and one 1/4 RIR/1/4 Brown Leghorn/ 1/2 Buff Sussex.
Well, I know I'm late, but my final results were 6 chicks from 36 eggs. *wince* I had a bad temp fluctuation on day 20, and I think that did in most of my chicks. I had 4 fast, natural hatches, 2 assisted hatches, and 4 additional pips. The last four were all mis-positions, as was one of the...
Got one pip and zip and hatch today, all in under 20 minutes. Had to leave the house to get access to internet and I'm hoping some of the rest do SOMETHING today. My incubator went nutzo last night with temp and humidity and I'm not hopeful now.
Had to assist 2 chicks yesterday, but they're...
Barnyard Surprise = RIR + one of my two half bantams. So he's either 1/2 RIR + 1/4 Silkie + 1/4 Easter Egger or he's 1/2 RIR + 1/4 Bantam Cochin + 1/4 NN Production Layer
You mean like me? Caught the gal making her delivery of EEr eggs to the feed store I was just in. They were still hen-warm. *cough* I may have a problem.
Tell me about fast. My first chick pipped about 3:10pm, by 3:30 we had a zip and a chick!
The two that are pipping right now started early this morning, around 4am and are STILL just eggs with holes in 'em.
Here's my little guy from 3:30pm yesterday...lookin all SASSY with his two 'dime store' mammas ;) He's so cute, cuddling between them. I had to take him out of the bator when he got stuck upside down in an egg cup *facepalm*
Sassy chick sez "What's unnatural about having two lime green...
I'll note that my incubator ran a bit warm the first week, then did this crazy spiking up to 106 one day, then settled down and ran at almost perfectly 100 degrees the rest of the hatch...so who knows if they're gonna be early, late, right on time...if this is the ONLY chick I get, I'll consider...
