Thank all who replied and commented on my chicken swing. I have listened to everyone and have decided to tweak the design a little. When this is accomplished, I will make the plea again, and see what y'all think. Again. Thank y'all!!

I thank you for your response. That would be great. I have done some research on this, today, and have found out, unless you have a really brave bird, they need coaxing to use it. Once the other girls see that it is not going to hurt them, they will start "a-swangin".

Hello all!! I had a brainstorm (0r brainfart) this morning. I came up with an idea for a portable chicken swing. It may not be able to be used in smaller runs, but in the bigger runs it will work very well. It would be perfect for a backyard chicken lover who lets his/her birds freerange...

Listen, racoons can climb just about anything, and so can a lot of other, not so nice critters. With a wide open front on the coop, you are inviting coons, skunks, possums, foxes, and that is just at night. During the day, you will probably go to collect eggs, and come across a snake or two...

I would take the hardware cloth all the way to the top. Racoons are very good at figuring things out and they are relentless at getting in and killing for the fun of it. Cyclone fencing will slow them down considerably, but hardware cloth will all but stop them. I build coops/runs for a living...

Another problem I see is chickens like to roost up as high as they can get. If you have your nesting boxes as high or higher than the roost, they will tend to want to roost in them. The first and second coops I built for me own, I made the mistake of putting the nesting boxes at the same height...

Welcome To BYC!!!! Please don't take this the wrong way, but I see a couple problems. First is not enough ventilation. Ventilation is very important to the chickens' health. The more ventilation the better. A lot of people, especially in the northern regions, tend to seal up their coops...

In my experience, after 12 birds, you have surpassed the "coop" phase. You need to check into an 8' x 10', or bigger building and convert it into a coop. You need 2 square feet per bird in the coop and 4sq ft per bird in the run. You probably know that already. To get a secure coop and run, this...

They are not as aggressive as coons, but, given a chance, they will kill and eat your birds. They have to be pretty hungry to do this, but they will.

You are not strange, no matter what your hubby says, you are a "Chickeneer"!!!! I do the very same thing, except without the book. If I did that, my wife would think I'm "strange." She knows I am "visiting" with my girls, and NO reading is getting done!!

Not only racoons and weasels, but coyotes, dogs, etc can get thru chicken wire. They should take that crap off the market, or improve it. It will keep (trap) chickens in, but will not keep anything out!! The whole thing about chicken wire is, it is "tied" together, not welded. If you work it...
