Hi all, Reading along but every time I start a reply I get interrupted. Dang kids. ;) Those foxtail are no joke. About 8 or 9 years ago one of our dogs had one get stuck under her tongue. It worked it's way down into the top of her throat from underneath the tongue and caused massive...

Happy birthday, little one!!! Okay I think I need more information about this pallet house of yours. Is that a window that I'm seeing on top? It looks very modern and I love it!! So for the walls do you just break the pallet up and then make the boards closer together? Its never really occurred...

This is absolutely adorable!!! Love! This is great to know! I've had my eye on SFH. I think that's what I might add next year. They seem lovely! :) Gah, sooo cute!!!! Love those happy smiles. How old? My youngest is 18mos and I'm already sad that she is my last baby. I'm so sorry. Poor thing...

I have a couple of others who will sleep up there during the day and in the early evening, but at night they make a chick pile with everyone else, lol. :) I have 3 that are nearly all feathered, so I could separate them into the other half of the brooder safely, I think. I'm okay with them...

Oh right, quarantine. Hmm. Not sure how I will manage that. These are from an NPIP breeder, but better safe than sorry I guess. I think I can separate the one I suspect will be the biggest problem, because she/he (I have suspicions I have a roo) is sleeping on top of the heater instead of under...

Question. At what age do older chicks stop tolerating newcomers, typically? I have 6 chicks, 4 are 4.5 weeks and 2 are 3.5 weeks (not really worried about the younger ones, though). I am thinking of adding 2 more, they are 2.5 weeks-ish. They will definitely be bigger than my legbar, so not the...

I realize you are all much more experienced than I am :) but I got 2 chicks from a feed store this year. They had about a 45 minute drive home with me, and I had them in a decent sized box with feed and water. I know those things aren't really necessary most of the time, but in this particular...

Hmm. I know I'm new (well, returning after a while), but maybe we can come! If I can it will be me and the kids. I have no eggs to swap and I'm very, very glad that there will be no chicks for sale, because I would for sure come home with a big box full. :)

Well... I might have a lovely 100% english blue orpington cockerel available! LOL! :)

Thank you! Frank is a straight run chick, he is from Papa's Poultry. You are right about the legs, I've been watching them and they are just as thin as my 4 week old chocolate orpington (who is a sex linked female). But, I'm not holding my breath. I am hopeful though!! :)

Here is my suspect blue orp. He is 3 weeks old, and is huge. He looks like a monster sized 3 day old chick, lol! His name is Frank, and naturally, he is everyone's favorite. Sigh. Anyone ever have a late blooming orpington that ended up being a girl? I also have a very suspect light...

Thank you for the welcomes, everyone! :) @Audio51 I'm pretty sure that's the cutest thing I've ever seen. Definitely in the top 10. :) I'm also swooning over your hen, is that an Orpington? Or a Wyandotte? It's so fluffy!!! I have a little blue orpington who sadly I think is a male. It's...

Hi everyone. :) It's been a long time since I've posted here, but I'd like to join in again! :) I live in Sacramento with my husband and four children (three boys ages 7, 5, almost 4, and a girl who is 18mos). Hope to post regularly, I love a good chat thread! :)

Interesting. So a broody will accept chicks that she didn't hatch? Does it matter how old the chicks are? That is a very good tip, thank you! And about the netting, noted. lol. Luckily I'm not too into ornamental plants, haha. Okay good, I'm not the only one. I think I will likely have...

Ha! I'm sure they are! I am definitely not cut out to be a duck keeper, at least at this point in my life. I have enough mess to do deal with. :)

I love seeing all the colors! What a fun basket you must put together. I'm going to admit something; I have a really hard time eating fertilized eggs. Did anyone else have this problem before they started chickening? I don't know what my problem is because I know that there's nothing wrong...

I have another plant question for everyone. :) Are there any plants that you've noticed that the chickens leave alone? I know I've seen lavender mentioned (and I also saw that someone DOES have their chickens pecking at it), sage... anything else? What about salvias? I'm trying to get a little...
