I know this question has been answered, the only thing i would add is that when you pick a breed do not pick the rarest breed in the standard. I know you may feel compelled to help save the really rare breeds but you will frustrate yourself when initially trying to find stock and trying to add...

I agree, we have a ton of recognized breeds and varieties that need work. I think more effort needs to be put to preserving and improving what already have, rather than making up new colors just becasue they are pretty....look at Marans, lots of different colors and inconsistent type. And...

Now that you mention it, we have a line of pea comb Leghorns at the University, and they have really crappy looking combs, there huge and flopped over. Those Leghorns are just used for genetic disease resistence research.....not a new type of Leghorn for the egg industry btw...

I have seen this with Leghorns, whenever you cross rose comb and single comb the rose combs will be kind of crappy for a few generations. But after breeding back to rose comb the combs will show improvement. I'm sure a lot of us know that already. I think it's nice someone is working with this...

If the comb is not too frozen hold a rag soaked in warm water on his comb. hold it there for maybe ten minutes and leave him where it warm for a day or so. I have done that with bantam Leghorn cockerels and it did work.

I don't mean to get this thread sidetracked, but are people seriously arguiung over whether or not that bird is a Wyandotte? Walt was actually there and saw it in person, why don't people believe him? Or am I just overreacting to others' reactions???

I think Tim Johnson of Weston, Ohio has some. I don't know if he sells eggs or chicks though. His contact info should be on the Ohio National's website. I believe he is the president of that club. If you can't find it let me know and I can probably find it for you.

I know gray hatch game hens are very good mothers. I have had some gray hatch X Leghorns that are excellent mothers as well. Very protective of their chicks I've seen them attack our dogs and my pigs. Silkies are good broodies as well, and I have seen light Sussex that were very persistent sitters.

Yes, compact fluorescents I believe. There is data on there from research done on broilers about different lighting options. Really good stuff because all of the actual data and numbers are there.

We were mostly talking about lights for growing broilers not breeders. But I know that the LEDs are getting some attention because they last long. I still have the handout from that lecture. It's in my dorm and I'm at home right now and won't be back until the 9th. I can pm you more info then if...

They are not or at least should not be considered jungle fowl. Echoing what has been said they are oriental breeds. But should not be called jungle fowl

You are correct, there is a thin spot on the back of the skull that I believe red wavelength light penetrates. Stimulating egg production and breeding activity. I just heard this in lecture this past fall.

I would think one 40-60 watt bulb would be fine. Since the light would be so close to bird level and its not a huge area you lighting one bulb should be adequate

There is a flock of SC dark brown Leghorns for sale in NY. A total of 13 birds. I found the ad in the poultry press on page 17 today and thought I'd share it here in case anyone is interested. These are not my birds but I know the breeder who is selling them and they are good quality birds. If...

I tend to agree with you. Often times pictures do not do a bird justice. I have seen many pictures in the press o champion birds that look really terrible because of the angle the pictures were taken at or how the bird was standing at that split second. Obviously they must have looked better in...

Really with complete feeds, all of that stuff is not necessary to feed. We have learned a lot about nutrition since those times and that information is almost completely obsolete. The only complaint I have is that many feeds are going with all plant protein. I don't like this because you are...
