X 2. True. Female embryos are stronger than male. In a case like this there is a stronger probability the it is a "she".

    candling/hatching question

Often chicks/ducklings don't dry fluffy in an incubator. Use a soft cloth and fluff him up. Naturally, ducklings have mom and each other to do this.

    candling/hatching question

Pip marks can be really hard to see in the dim of an incubator even with a flashlight. Look for what appears to be bumps. Looking closely you may even see tiny cracks on the bumps. You might see a pip hole, but don't expect to. FINGERS CROSSED.

    candling/hatching question

Do not candle. If you do and the duckling dies in the shell you will feel terrible thinking your actions responsible. It is very hard to assist an egg in hatching if you're not very experienced and even if you are. Most ducklings/chicks that can not pip are just too weak and do not have a...

    candling/hatching question

I do hope so. You've tried so hard and that egg has been through so much. Fingers are crossed.

    candling/hatching question

Normally a mallard would hatch close to the 28 days, but your egg is a survivor of an abandoned nest. It's an oddity that the embryo lived. By being a survivor the incubation period may be thrown off; and its anyone's guess when the egg will hatch. Keep fingers, toes, and eyes crossed. Good luck.

Good luck. I hope all turns out well.

    candling/hatching question

Day 27? A mallard egg? Yes. Lockdown should have started before this. Mallard eggs have an incubation period of 28 days. Lockdown should have begun yesterday if not the day before. Lockdown should start two or three days before the eggs are expected to hatch.

    candling/hatching question

When an incubator is opened during lockdown there's a risk in a change of humidity that could cause the DIS. Consider keeping your incubator closed at this time; it's hard I know, but important for a good hatch.

I've used home-made incubators and "real" incubators and the natural way too. There's going to be problems with each.

    candling/hatching question

Hatch time takes patience-impatience can lead to disaster. All to often I've read posts where impatience has led people to believe they had to "help" the egg hatch only to have that new life die.

Thanks. Its bound to be better than the little flashlight I'm using now. Good luck with the egg.

Sounds pretty cool. What do you use to candle with? I've been using a small flashlight for years which definitely does not show much detail.

    candling/hatching question

This morning when I candled I didn't see movement in 2 of the 3 eggs I have left. All 3 of the eggs look different when I candled. The 3rd egg has major movement and the embryo looks larger. The other 2 look different. Can someone please tell me what you think? sorry for so many post and...

    candling/hatching question

If you are sure that the smell is coming from that egg, yes you should remove it. Smell means harmful bacteria. Many of us have had bad eggs explode; not something you want to deal with.

    candling/hatching question

That's what I thought I remembered. The hen must have gone back to her nest for that night. I doubt eggs/embryos would survive being chilled that long.

    candling/hatching question

How long were those eggs not brooded by the mallard hen? I don't remember seeing this in posts. Curious.
