    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

Update on Fred...she seems much more normal today. Foraging, walking around & chasing bouncing snacks...but no egg today (yet). Keeping an eye on her. I found nothing unusual about her poop, no strange discharge from her vent, no discharge from eyes or nose. Maybe she was just having a...

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

Fred, our White Leghorn, has been a little sluggish lately. She still eats, drinks and chases bouncing snacks (grapes, etc) with the rest of 'em...but she naps rather than forages and isn't as lively as she used to be. She is approximately 8 months old, and she's still laying an egg a day...

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

Since I took this picture, her comb has returned to normal color...and I haven't seen it turn purple since. She's still laying daily, eating and interacting like normal. She does nap a little more than normal, but it has been a little hotter than normal lately. Just keeping an eye on her to...

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

I live in Texas. It's been in the high 90's to low 100's for a couple of months now. Since I took this picture, her comb has returned to normal color...and I haven't seen it turn purple since. She's still laying daily, eating and interacting like normal. She does nap a little more than...

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

Fred's comb was a little purple on the ends, just before bedtime...it got a little paler too. Is this normal?

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

Her legs look healthy. Our White Leghorn had pale yellow legs before she began laying...then they got a little darker. Beautiful bird!

Fred (White Leghorn) & Goldie (Rumpless Easter Egger) in the nesting box at the same time. The treasure they were guarding.

Madam Fred when we got her. Madam Fred, now.

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

I think "Fred" (my daughter named her) has a lovely comb...and, since I hadn't seen many images of White Leghorns with "lopped combs", I think it looks quite unique. I'll try to catch her and take a picture ASAP. They are either camera shy or camera hogs...depending on the day. Ha-ha!

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

Question: Is it common for White Leghorn hens to have combs that fall over one eye? Our hen's comb is beautiful, and doesn't appear to bother her, but it is big and flops over her right eye. I haven't really seen any images of hens with this kind of comb and wanted to make sure it's not...

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

My most recent picture of "Fred", taken a couple of days ago. I guess her to be approximately 16/17wks old. (Youth-size soccer ball next to her) And this is our first chicken egg (we used to have laying ducks)...I found this little guy on the floor of their run just before locking The...

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

Fred's comb is coming in nicely. Any guesses how old she is (I think maybe 16wks-ish)?

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

Fred's she-comb is big enough it leans to the right & wobbles a little. Awww! - TieDyeMommy

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

Looks like our White Leghorn, "Fred", IS our trusty layer. This morning there were no eggs in the coop, but I did find two eggs in Fred's favorite shade spot under the edge of the duck "pond"/pool. Now that the ducks have been re-homed, I will have space to put some nesting boxes in the coop...

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

I was hoping to avoid clipping wings, but if this persists, she might actually escape (accidentally). Thanks! - TieDyeMommy
