We are a new brewery that will be generating 1000's of lbs of "spent grain" each week. Spent grain is our term for ground barley that has been used in brewing and much of the starch content has been converted away. The resulting wet grain is excellent livestock feed that contains about 30% protein and you can read about it

I saw this add on craigslist this morning. Is this safe for chickens?

Thanks, Sonja

I'm a home brewer and I feed some of my spent grain to my Brahma's. They like it but I think it doesn't have enough nutrients to be the only thing you feed them. I give it to them as a treat, like scratch.

Thank you very much. I'll give it a try then. My birds need a protein boost right now, so I was hoping it might do the trick. Especially, when they start foraging this summer.

My flock loves the stuff. It also makes great bread! But I feed it as a treat not as their main diet.

I'm a home brewer and I give my girls spent grain. It probably is not a complete diet but as a treat it's fine. With 1,000 of pounds of spent grain, you'll have plenty to give your chicken keeping customers. Brings a new meaning to "lady's night"

I just finished brewing an oatmeal stout and was wondering if the grains could be fed to chickens, mine are just a few days old so I figured they couldn't have it now, but maybe in the future, do you feed it to them as soon as you brew with it or dry them back out? Do you just feed them all at once or a few handfuls at a time, keep in mind I only have 12 chicks

I brew and I only give about 1/2 the grain to my chickens, as I don't want them to only get the spent grains. They seem to love it though, so I limit the amount they get.
