Trying to be an Educated Neighbor to a New Chicken Coop

We live in an urban area and came home from vacation to a new chicken coop in the yard directly behind ours. Our community doesn't have any regulations related directly to chicken coops, but they do have regulations regarding structures, composting, noise, etc. I believe there are four chickens that coo quietly throughout the day--not a problem. I have been trying to find answers to my concerns with little luck.

Their yard adjoins my vegetable garden. The chickens are allowed to roam free in their backyard, including the area adjacent to my vegetable garden. Should I be concerned about the droppings and the inherent bacteria leaching thru the soil into my garden?

If the droppings are not composted properly, or if the owners are just spreading the uncomposted droppings around the yard, again do I have to worry about any adverse effects on my vegetables? Our lots are too small for me to move my garden.

I'm really trying to educate myself so I can live in harmony with these new feathered neighbors. Thanks.

It shouldn't be a concern. I have a quarter acre garden and wild birds are in it all the time eating bugs doing there business. I wash all my vegetables when I harvest them as I am sure you do as well. But...if you feel you should be concerned...build a small earthen berm on the property line.... problem solved...To be honest, if the chicken wouldn't eat the vegetables, I would encourage them into my garden..they are pretty affective at insect control...
