OMG, Coco's chicks started hatching 1 day early! Now I'm freaking out, wonderimg why I allowed 6 broodies to lay on eggs. How am I going to keep them separated from each other and from the frock so there is no fighting and no chick gets injured or killed? I have a 4' x 7' cage with no bottom, but the space between th e bars is about 1", that's too big, rats can go through a 3/4" space. I have 1" poultry wire but can't use that because of the holes actually being over an inch wide. I guess I can kick my Bantams out of their 5' x 7 1/2' coop and try to keep all 6 broodies and their chicks in there, but for how long? And what do I do if the mamas start fighting with each other?

Update: Coco is being such a good mom. Just 2 chicks have hatched today. The rest are due to hatch tomorrow. It's very cold and windy here in NYC today, tomorrow will be warmer.

Oh, 1 chick came out of a blue egg from my bantam Easter Egger. The other chick came out of a small white egg. It looks to me like both chicks are going to have a puffy crest. The possible father can be any of my 4 roosters, a buff Polish, a cream Brabanter and 2 golden neck Old English Game Bantams. The females I have that lay small white eggs are the Silkies, Sebright and Polish bantams, the Brabanters and Appenzeller Spitzhauben lay extra large white eggs. Can anyone make their best guess on the parentage of these 2 chicks?

Only 4 of Coco's 7 eggs hatched. One chicks from one of the other broodies was born early so I gave it to Coco to raise. Here are Coco's cute babies.

As of yesterday, my Sultan, Snow (Nieves in Spanish), has hatched 4 chicks. There will probably be more today. Snow is very overprotective, she growls whenever she sees me and pecks me whenever my hand gets close, even when I'm just adding more food or changing her water. Here she is with her 1st born.

A couple of days ago, I had to help 1 chick hatch after it got shrink wrapped in it's damaged egg. I think that it had been under Snow, so was just a few days away from hatching when it got damaged by another hen that tried to eat it, while Snow was out of the nest box to relieve herself. She also broke another egg from my other broody black Silkie, Mocha, but that egg had an underdeveloped fetus so I discarded. I had stupidly forgotten to close the top of the nest box when I went to get more food. The chick on Snow's egg was well developed, probably would have hatched within 4 days. Because of the big hole on egg and the visible blood, I thought the chick would die, but I put it under Mocha (because by then Snow had a 2 day old chick and was too rough turning her remaining eggs with this premature chick, I feared she would injure it, Mocha didn't have any chicks yet). I hoped against hope that the chick survives and hatched, though if it survives to hatching I expected it would get shrink wrapped because of the big hole on shell. That's exactly what happened. 3 days later I had to helped it hatched by using warm water on paper towel to wet the egg shell and dried up linning that was stuck to the chick, and slowly and carefully peeling the shell and membrane small piece by piece. I still had my doubts that it would survive, as it looked like it has an open umblilical, I dabbed antibiotic ointment on it before placing him under Goldie (because she's more gentle) next to her 1st born, but to my surprise and relief it has survived. The chick looked very weak for at least a day, but against all odds, after such a rough start, it has survived and appears to be doing well.

Here it is the next day, dried and sleepy.

Goldie now has 3 chicks with the one hatched last night, might have more today. The Miracle chick is the one closer to Goldie. I can tell by the faded blood stain on it's back. The top chick is her 1st born.

My 2 splash Silkies are still waiting for their eggs to hatch. As of 2 days ago, 1 of my mottled Cochin bantams have gone broody. I might try to break her brood, as I don't think I can handle any more broody hens and more chicks.

One of the first batch of recent chicks was failing to thrive and I was giving it a drop of Nutridrench and it moved and inhaled the whole big drop right up it's nostril. Now it's gasping for air and looking worse than ever. Sigh.
