Who Knew?! Lucy is on her third nest of the season. Having lost the first two nests, this is good news.....I think. Just for the records,(for those of you who can use this info for your own birds)- she sat on the first nest full term, but I think those eggs suffered too much disturbance- between raccoon theft and me moving them while checking etc... so they only developed partially. That nest was started May 12.(in Ohio) I Took her off the eggs June 22. She started a new nest July 22- but that was out side the pen and was attacked by some thing- so was aborted soon after. She is now on her 3rd nest, started around August 25. What surprised me is, I only have the one male, Blue: and Blue dropped his tail quite early this year. I'm assuming these eggs are fertile, as Lucy is a veteran Momma. Which means... Blue fertilized these eggs after he had lost his tail.
I kinda thought the tail drop marked the end of the" Hanky Panky"!

Shows how little I know. If these eggs hatch- I'm gonna need to start knitting little peachick sweaters!

Sorry, I can't help it.

A little bird was flying south for the winter. It got so cold it froze up and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As it lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy.

A passing cat heard the little bird singing, and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out-and then ate him.

The morals of the story are:

1. Not everyone who drops $hit on you is your enemy.

2. Not everyone who gets you out of $hit is your friend.

3. When you're in deep $hit, keep your mouth shut

Don't birds require grit in the crawl to process worms or run the risk of getting compacted?

While he was with me I was adding a small pinch of chick grit to the medicated starter. I do that right from day 1 with my chicks.

I would suggest continuing to put a little in with the food, I do it until they are on the ground and can find their own.

Well there will be no reunion for Poop-Baby and Mom, we tried and she kept hissing at the little one and then tried to peck him/her. So now I'm walking around with a chick in the kangaroo pocket of my sweatshirt. Poop has discovered food and loves it, but will not drink from a dish yet, only my fingernail. And songs, poems and children's books notwithstanding, baby's favorite past time is reading Kathy's latest posts.

Currently a hen roosting / nesting in garage under close observation will be starting her third brood soon. Presently she has 13 eggs in nest. First brood has 9 surviving juveniles, second has three. It is possible she will attempt a fourth in November / December if babied.
