anybody raise sprouts to feed the chickens?

I built a box that is 2' wide and 6' long out of 1"x6" treated lumber. I did not put a bottom in it but on top I put 1/2 square galvinized wire hardware cloth. I set it in the outside portion of the pen. I then filled it halfway up with potting soil. Then I liberally sprinkled oat and wheat seeds on top of the soil. I watered it really good and in just a few days I had sprouts coming up. As the sprouts would grow through the hardware the fowl would nip it off. By having the wire on top they could not scratch up the plantings and ruin it....this will produce a lot of green for them.

Redbird1950!

I want to do this when it warms up for them to have greens in their run in the months that greens will grow outside!!! I guess you are temperate enough where you still have things growing outside?

That works very well, tho it can be frustrating to the gals who want to scratch it up!
I used to live in NW GA; Cumming & Dawsonville, before it turned into a megalopolis.

No I'm from Oklahoma, just about 50 miles south of Tulsa.
Seems like there should be granaries / silos / farmers where you could ask for culls, sweepings, etc??
But, I'd skip #3; your gals may want too many Snickers bars . . .

ABSTRACT
Rice bran is an energy and protein rich ingredient used in poultry feeding. To balance energy and protein requirements.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of rice bran on performance and egg quality during peak production
of a commercial White laying strain of 22 week of age. Dietary treatments were consisted by inclusion of rice bran at
0, 5, 10 and 15% levels. Each treatment had 6 reps in which 12 birds were randomly assigned in wired fl oor battery
cages equipped with nipple drinkers and through feeders. Layers accessed to feed and water freely. Lighting regimen
was adjusted to 16h light/8h dark. The experiment lasted for 10 weeks.

Overall results of the present experiment indicated that rice bran could be included up to 10% without any adverse
affect on laying performance, egg quality and digestive organs.

Key words: Rice Bran, laying hens, egg production, egg quality
