Da' Cute and Cuddly Call Duck thread!

Well today was interesting. Both phoebe and Maggie started sitting a while ago but the Drake died a few weeks before they started sitting. So I bought them some fertile eggs which were due to hatch on the 5th of June. I left some of phoebes eggs in the nest so it didn't feel like such a dramatic drop of eggs when I put only a couple fertile ones in. Anyways I've been really busy at work recently so don't always go find Phoebe as she's sitting in someone else's field. I always go find her though if I don't see her after two days. I realised today it had been a couple days so I went to see her only to find her missing and what I thought was an eaten egg in the nest and a couple cold ones. I assumed the worst and thought something had killed her and ate some eggs. I searched everywhere for her when I found her right the way across the field she was sitting in with 3 little babies! She must have laid the eggs soon after the Drake went!! Wasn't expecting that at all! Just hope she hasn't been off the others too long. The broody chickens were happy to take them!

Johnn, is Phoebe Aleutian color? She is gorgeous!

Oh, Johnn, your call ducks are just so stinkin' cute! I was just popping over to ask about experiences with broody call ducks--I forgot about your girls. So it is possible! My Trudi went broody and I thought I'd let her hatch with the hopes that she would hatch another hen or two because Malcolm is just getting too much for her alone and Crash won't be convinced to go live with them. Sadly, I think Trudi's quickly proving that she has no idea what she's doing and I'm pretty sure she's managed to kill any chance of her last egg (out of the 7 she started with...) developing. I don't think she's been turning it at all, and she does things like letting it stick out from under her so it isn't actually keeping warm at all. There's only one egg, so no reason why she can't keep it under herself! Last night, she was sitting a few feet away from her nest with the egg sticking out from under her again. She somehow managed to push it out of the nest and just followed it to where it stopped rolling, I guess! Oh, well. Looks like if I want more calls, I'm just going to have to get out the incubator and do all the work myself!

Anyway, here's a few pictures of Crashie being a stinker. :D Crash says, "Hellooo?"

Might let her try a second time, was this her first try? I found with my most typey line (Snowy) the girls kinda played around with being broody the first time, but the 2nd they fully committed and did extremely well...

She is so photogenic! I know @Ravynscroft 's girls are all kinds of broody. She even has some double decker moms to be going on.

Oh, right, I forgot about Ravyn's broody calls, too! Don't mind me, sleep deprivation has me a little loopy at the moment...

lol... no biggie... I think I have more broody Calls right now than I have ever had of broodys, period!

Even a Trifecta of broodys, lol...

And Cuteness, who played at broody last year without success, but this year she was very, very successful...

Yeah, I think Trudi's just an oddball. I have a few chicken hens that are like that, not quite sure why they want to sit in the nest, but they definitely want to, and they don't need any eggs under them, thank you. So maybe it's just that I attract odd birds. Crash. Very cute. Very CUTE AND SQUEEZABLE. Look at her face. She is a round burb. She cannot help it if she is the way she is. She is too much for me.

And I love your Crash!!!! She is absolutely adorable!! :love
Would swap eggs with you... ;)

Yep, might just be she hasn't quite figured it out yet... :fl she does next time!

Oh, I would so love to swap eggs with you! But right now, I have to be very strict about the conditions in which birds or eggs leave the property. I can explain why over PM (or conversations, I guess?) if you'd like. Sorry. :(

Yup, I'm leaving my hopes for ducklings on next time. I candled her egg last night and it has that orangey glow to it like it started to develop, but no obvious veining or anything. It's been 10-14 days at least, there should definitely be a lot more going on by now! I think at this point I'm going to toss it and see if I can convince her to stop brooding and lay just a few more eggs. She and Crash both have very short laying seasons (generally, they only lay from March through June), so it may just have to wait until next year anyway.

This pic of Rav's Crash gurl IS TORTURING ME. SWEET LITTLE ROUND OF SOFT WITH HER SWEET FACE.

 No one says it quite like you, Julie Bird.

Some more pictures of my li'l duckies. :love Here's Malcolm and Trudi from yesterday. Trudi is pretending to be invisible, so you definitely can't see her in this picture. :p

Meanwhile, poor, abused Crash is being FORCED to wet her bedding all over again because I did an awful thing and--GASP--cleaned her pen!

"What?"

Crash innocent.jpg

Yeah, nothing suspicious going on here.

I picked up a shaving to show her, but that just infuriated her more!

Then, she gave me a stern nibbling. That'll teach me!

Aaand this is her, "No one's going to believe you," pose. Who would ever believe this little darling could cause any such trouble, right?
