Prices went up a while ago. You're looking at an easy $300 for a 5lb bird.Boxes exist for sending chickens through the mail. Maybe look at information for mailing adult birds--space per bird, what bedding would keep it from stinking up the post office, ideas for wet feed that they can eat while traveling (but which doesn't spill).
If chickens can get mailed safely (24+ hours not unusual), they should also be fine travelling with you. You already know not to leave them sitting in hot sun, which is one of the biggest dangers to avoid.
