We all have the feed in which we pefer and feed that we hate.
I think it would be fun to see what people feed
Say what feed you like and why and one feed you just dont like and say why
I will go first.
I like kruse for all stages of growth it always looks and smells fresh and I like the ingerdents
The feed I dont like is Purina start and grow and their layer feed it smells off and looks old and I dont like their ingredients and my birds always look like their missing somthing when they are fed Purina versus kruse which they always grow and look nice

Wow, you get mad when someone just doesn't like something, calm down dude. As far as I can tell, corn really isn't much to them. Every where I see, corn isn't really that amazing as you say it is. And as for Purina, as far as I can tell, if their other pet foods are crap, then most of it is gonna be crap to me. Plus, I just don't like Purina, plain as that. I've tried the one at tractor supply(small bag, can't remember the exact name) and it wasn't that good. My chickens didn't really eat it as much as what I buy from my local mill, or Mana. Of course, some people may not like what I use and like Purina, that's their business.

Also, I can't shake off that you say corn is just so good for chickens--give me a good, unbiased source that is educational that tells me that corn "slims" a chicken down.
I have yet gotten mad, and also I am not a "dude" learn the definition. (the Real One)

Purina Mills, the company in the U.S. that is owned by Land-O-Lakes and manufactures livestock feed and Red Flannel dog/cat food .
Purina PetCare, the company in the U.S. that is owned by Nestlé manufactures Pet Food etc. Pro Plan.
Just because you used one doesn't mean you used the other, also just because you used Purina Mills cheaper feeds like the ones sold a TSC doesn't mean that you used there better feeds like there wildlife or Mazuri.

I am not going to do your homework for you, but I will say this chickens eat to fill caloric energy, when that need is met they stop eating.
Feeding a lot of corn will in turn make the bird eat less and ingest less nutrition that corn does not provide.
Corn is very high in Digestible Energy (DE), Energy of Maintenance (NEm), Energy of Gain (NEg) and Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN)

Here is a little information on corn and the comparison of corn to Barley, Wheat, Oats and Sorghum. Note how corn has more TDN, NEm, NEG, lower NDF and ADF. (a plus in poultry).

As I said I'm not going to do your homework for you, there are a lot of good sites on poultry nutrition out there all you have to do is look for them.

TDN = Total Digestible Nutrients
NEm = Net Energy of Maintenance
NEg = Net Energy of Gain
CP = Crude Protein
NDF = Neutral Detergent Fiber
ADF = Acid Detergent Fiber

To follow up, perhaps you would be willing to provide insight into the truth that GM crops containing Bt toxin may cause toxic effects to multiple organ systems, allergic reactions and/or sensitize humans - and thence animals - to other food substances?

There have been 100s of real pear reviewed scientific studies and nothing conclusively dangerous has been found in GMO crops... I'm not going to debate it as most people have their minds made up and no matter what any study shows people will argue only the side that fits their views...

The reality is most all organic and even certified GMO free labeled products now contains GMO genes, the door is opened and it's never going to be shut...

Either through genetic selection, naturally occurring genetic mutation, selective breeding and/or gene splicing the foods we grow today are not what I would consider 'natural' they have all been tweaked and modified to our needs and wants...

IMO, just because humans tweaked the the genes and took an evolutionary short cut does not equate to bad nor good, any less or more than a natural selectively breed mutation being good or bad...

Just look at 'corn' 8000 some odd years ago compared to what it is today after human tampering and domestication...

I say do what you feel best for yourself, if GMO, Organic or non-GMO floats your boat go with it... It's the same philosophy I take towards those that choose to be vegetarians, I don't condemn their choice or argue that they are eating the wrong things and I would expect the same courtesy back in regards to my eating choices...

I don't like feeds that have a lot of corn. Corn isn't really good for much of anything, except fattening them up. Purina feeds aren't that great either, but any of the foods they make aren't really good. Scratch..I've never had to use scratch, ever. If I give them a treat like that its always bird seed or a good cat food.

I do like Mana and the stuff my local mill makes. They have been pretty good for me so far.

GMO's really don't matter to me either, because I've never had anything wrong when I feed my birds something that is gmo.
You really don't know much about poultry nutrition or feedstuff do you?
If you did you would know that corn is a very good energy source, a good source of vitamins/minerals and does not fatten chicken much sense chickens eat to fill a caloric need and when chickens are fed high amounts of corn they thin out because they don't eat as much, they really don't get fat off corn.

Have you ever used Purina's Mazuri, Wildlife or there Show Feed? If not how do you know that all of Purina's feeds aren't good?

Chris does not seem "mad" at all - but to have misinformation peddled as fact can be frustrating when the correct information is readily available to anyone who takes the time to avail themselves of it. The only one reading as being defensive or taking this as more than a conversation about feed is you

I'm trying to learn so my question is:

One of the ingredients in the organic food is Penicillum funiculosum fermentation product.

Isn't Penicillum a type of antibiotic? If it is then wouldn't that be bad to feeding your chickens very day? Or can it be compared to making penicillin from mold? That the base for the antibiotic is in the mold but doesn't become an antibiotic until you take the mold and modify it. Sorry if I'm not making sense just trying to wrap my brain around the info.

When I google searched it I came up with a lot of articles like this one http://www.researchgate.net/publica...mination_synthesis_and_antibacterial_activity

The penicillium funiculosum fermentation product that's used in Nature's Best 16% Organic Layer Pellets can be used of a number of things, including a growth stimulator, to help poultry digest diets high in starchy/high fibrous grains like Wheat, Oats, Barley and Rye.

It is fermented so it shouldn't be a antibiotic. I know that there were some debated on if it was safe or not.

I like whole grain/seed feeds (like Scratch and Peck) that I can both free feed and sprout.

If that were not an option, I could live with a local, non-GMO quality pellet food, but like you I wouldn't chose Purina.

For Feeds that I like, Mazri Feed I like a lot and it could be one of the best commercial feeds out there. I also like my mix's also.
As for feeds I dislike, well to make a very long list short I dislike any feed that does not contain animal proteins. To me there just a cheaply made feed and are not worth the money you pay for them.

Chris, I can't find anything about Mazri Feed online via google. Any tips where I might find it? And what do you prefer using for animal protein in your own mixes? Thanks.
