Chicken terms are useful if you are just starting out with chickens and find yourself in a "What does that mean?" situation. Here are a few chicken terms that the beginning chicken-keeper should know or might need to know:

Hen: An adult female chicken
Rooster: An adult male chicken
Roo: A shortening of "rooster"
Pullet: A young female chicken
Poult: A young male chicken. Young turkeys can also be referred to as poults.
Chick: A baby chicken
Cockerel: A young male chicken.

Sex-link: A breed of chicken that's chicks will different colors depending on gender, and determine the sex of the chick from early on.

Embryo: A developing chick inside an egg
Yolk: The yellow substance inside an egg- it's used as food for the embryo.

Bloom: The thin coating of an eggshell that helps to protect it

Cull: To select chickens or chicks and remove them from the group. Culled chicks are usually not fit for breeding stocks.
Dub: Dubbing is the act of trimming or removing a chickens' (usually show roosters) wattles or crest.

Spur: A bony growth from a rooster's legs. Spurs are made of keratin like fingernails are, just thicker. They grow slowly but may need to be trimmed or removed when they grow to dangerous lengths- roosters use their spurs for fighting, mostly.

Breast
: The chest meat of a chicken. Meat breeds are usually selected for the largest portion of this meat, since it is one of the best and commonly-used for cooking. Nuggets are made of breast meat.
Drumstick: The leg portion of a chicken. This is what part you always see the stereotype caveman eating.
