MOTHERHEN TRIES TO HATCH AN EGG!
OF ALL THE THINGS IN THE WORLD I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER DO..HATCHING AN EGG WOULD PROBABLY BE ON THE TOP OF MY LIST!
CREAMY CHICKEN (WHITE ROCK HEN) I RESCUED CREAMY FROM A COMMERCIAL EGG PRODUCER..SHE WAS CONSIDERED "SPENT" AND THEY THREW HER IN THE TRASH, I WATCHED HER STRUGGLE TO BREAK FREE FROM THE DEAD BODIES OF HER FRIENDS! I ASKED IF I COULD TAKE HER HOME...THEY SAID THEY DID NOT CARE SO I DID-CREAMY FELL IN LOVE WITH MY WHITE ROOSTER NAMED ANGEL. THEIR FIRST CHICK WAS NAMED COUNTRY GRAVY BUT CREAMY WAS TOO WEEK TO SIT ON THE EGG. ANGEL HATCHED FOR HER! AFTER A YEAR CREAMY WAS DOING MUCH BETTER AND TURNED OUT TO BE MY SITTIN' HEN. SHE GOT HER A CLUTCH OF EGGS AND PROCEEDED TO TRY TO HATCH THEM IN MY CLOSET..ON THE FLOOR ON TOP OF SOME CLOTHING SHE HAD PULLED FROM THE LAUNDRY BASKET. I WAS AFRAID TO MOVE HER...AS I DID WANT TO SEE A BABY CHICK HATCH. DAYS WENT BY AND SHE WOULD NOT LEAVE HER LITTLE NEST. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I DIDNT GET MY LAUNDRY BACK.
EVERY TIME I TRIED TO PET HER OR FEED HER WITH A SOUP LADLE SHE WOULD SCREECH AT ME..WARNING ME."STAY AWAY!" EVERYONE TOLD ME NOT TO TOUCH HER OR THE EGGS OR SHE WOULD NOT HATCH THEM..
EVERY MORNING THERE I WAS..TRYING TO GET MY HAND IN THE NEST TO CHECK HOW MANY EGGS SHE HAD...I RAISED CREAMY FROM A BABY SO I WAS SURE SHE TRUSTED ME..AND EVERY MORNING...SHE BIT ME.
CREAMY FINALLY GOT OUT OF THAT NEST AFTER TEN DAYS..SHE DIDNT GO POTTY IN THE NEST THE WHOLE TIME..I WAS AMAZED. ROOSTER JOHN AND I WERE IN THE LIVING ROOM DRINKING OUR COFFEE WHEN CREAMY RAN OUT OF THE BEDROOM FLAPPING HER WINGS, RUNNING ABOUT WILDLY AND SCREECHING AT EVERYONE IN THE ROOM! SHE POUNCED ON LUCY OUR ROTTWEILLER AND SCARED POOR LUCY HALF TO DEATH THEN PROCEEDED TO TERRORIZE SPOOKY OUR DACHSUND. THE DOGS RAN AND HID BEHIND MY CHAIR..WE WERE LAUGHING SO HARD WATCHING THE DOGS WHEN SUDDENLY WE SMELLED THE MOST AWFUL STENCH I HAVE EVER SMELLED..CREAMY POOH POOHED RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LIVING ROOM FLOOR...A STINK BOMB! WE WERE HORRIFIED! AFTER CLEANING UP THE MESS AND OPENING ALL THE WINDOWS AND DOORS THE STENCH WOULD NOT ABATE FOR MORE THAN A WEEK NO MATTER WHAT WE DID. WE THREW THE CARPET OUT AND DECIDED TILE IN THE LIVING ROOM MIGHT BE A BETTER OPTION. THE THOUGHT OF PUTTING HER IN THE HEN HOUSE JUST NEVER OCCURED TO ME AS I WAS AFRAID THE OTHER GIRLS MIGHT HURT HER CHICKS OR EGGS.
WHILE SHE WAS AWAY FROM HER NEST EATING AND DRINKING...I PUT ON MY GARDEN GLOVES AND PICKED UP THE LAUNDRY AND EGGS AND PLACED THEM IN A CLEAN COVERED CAT LITTER BOX. THEN I ADDED SOME HAY. CREAMY RETURNED TO THE NEST IN THE CLOSET ONLY TO FIND IT GONE..SHE WENT INTO A RAGE AND TRIED TO ATTACK ME!! I WAS TERRIFIED AND SCREAMED FOR MY HUSBAND ROOSTER JOHN TO COME AND HELP ME..HIS RESPONSE WAS "YOU SHOULDNT HAVE TOUCHED HER NEST!" WELL THE PROBLEM WAS...I COULDNT GET HER INTO THE SPARE BEDROOM TO HER EGGS IN THE KITTY LITTER BOX! SHE STARTED CHASING ME AND SCREECHING AGAIN...JOHN PICKED HER UP AND SHE CALMED SOMEWHAT AND HE PLACED HER IN THE BOX WITH HER EGGS..SHE IMMEDIATLY RELAXED AND STARTED CHEWING ON THE HAY AND MAKING A CIRCLE AROUND HER EGGS..WE WATCHED WITH FASCINATION FROM A SAFE DISTANCE. ANY APPROACH AND SHE WOULD screech at us! We stayed back. Creamy hatched her chicks but after the first one was born..We named it lil' Red.. she tried to kill the other chicks that were born after the first one.i quickly removed the other two chicks. There were about 17 eggs under her. Creamy was so exhausted i started feeding her with a ladle and water and she started coming out everyday to go potty..drop a stink bomb...so i took her eggs away.
I put the eggs on a small nest of hay to immitate a nest and placed them near a space heater with a towel over top of them. i carried them around in my pockets of my hoodie everywhere I went trying to keep them warm. learned how to candle them..there was something in there so i was excited. Each night I put them back in the box with the heater...one morning I got up and there was an awful smell.........the eggs were exploding! not hatching...it occured to me at that point that i had no idea how to hatch an egg!
STAY TUNED IN! CHECK OUT: MY MICE IN THE HEN HOUSE , MOTHERHENS FOX 4 CHICKEN TOO, SPACE HEATERS IN THE HEN HOUSE, BABY CHICKS AND DANGEROUS BEDDING AND BREWSTER THE ROOSTER.
