One of my layers was on top of the coop tonight and I reached up and grabbed by the back of the neck. I learned to NEVER do that because a large flap of skin was removed when the chicken tried to fly off.

I mean a large flap. The bird ran off and was continuing to live but was dripping blood from her mouth.

I feel really, really sad and terrible for doing this to my bird! I am unsure if I should go ahead and kill her or just see what happens!!!!

Thanks,

Ron

so is the skin still there? Just stitch it back together and give it a dusting with flour to stop bleeding. Get some antibiotic from the vet.

Healthy chickens usually recover quick from injuries.

Here's a hint...don't grab the tail feathers...LOL

But seriously! lol! The bird should be just fine, but you will need to catch her and at least put a slathering of triple-antibiotic ointment on her neck.

Never thought about that! But, I'm all out of suture needles <smile> Seriously, should I just use a sewing needle and thread?

Yes, the skin is still there, but it's just hanging. It's probably a 3-inch piece of skin.

I would just saw it up and maybe leave a little tiny hole to drain. A regular needle will work just fine. Use antibotic ointment on it til it is healed up. In the future you might not want to grab her by the neck feather's

I'm so sorry for you and your chicken, we all make mistakes/have accidents, so I'm not going to say anything critical

The bleeding from the mouth does not sound good though, are you sure it wasn't just blood running down from the injury & dripping off face?

If you could put her somewhere with heat, food, water with pedialyte or vitamins, it probably wouldn't hurt. Also if she is running around stressing it will inrease blood pressure & increase bleeding, so calm & quiet is good, too.

Evaluate her injury, does it need sutures, how bad is it, is it just skin or does there seem to be muscle involvement, etc. Is the bleeding under control? If you can get a better idea of how severe the injury is, you will have a better idea of what to do (supportive care, veterinary treatment, or humane euthanasia)...

I'm 100% sure that the blood was internal, not external.

IF the skin is going to get reattached, I guess sutures is the only way. I mean, there is literally a 3 sq. in. piece of skin hanging from her neck. I can see ALL underlying anatomical structures.
