I only have a few minutes but I want to ask your advice before I leave for my dentist appt. My kids and I went out earlier and on our way home I almost hit a (big) puppy that was on the shoulder of the road. She went into someone's yard but she was loose and it bothered me, so I turned around and went up to the house of the yard she was in. A woman came out and said it wasn't her puppy but she was "over there all the time" playing with her two Rat Terrier dogs that she cables outside for some during the day. She said the puppy belonged to a neighbor who lived ACROSS THE ROAD (this is a busy road that connects 2 highways, with tons of subdivisions and houses on it!) but he was never home during the day. I looked at the yard where the puppy lives and there was no fence for her and I did not see where he had her tied anywhere either. She has a collar but no tags... no name tag, no rabies tag, nothing. There is a leash law in our county. This loose puppy is a danger to not only herself, but to motorists who may swerve to avoid her in the road (as I did.) I have her cabled to a tree in my front yard right now. What should I do? Should I take her back to her owner (who has a big "private property" sign attached to his front porch) or should I try to get her into rescue. She looks to be about 4 months old, or so, and she is going to be enormous. She has HUGE feet and she looks like a Boxer/Great Dane mix.... black and white. Beautiful, sweet, playful as all get out. She deserves more than becoming road kill.

Gotta run now, will check replies when I get back. Thanks!

That poor dog. The only problem with taking her to a rescue is that someone is bound to have seen her tied up in your yard and the owner could get nasty. I would do it anyways if it was me.

keep her

No lease, no tags and running loose - it sounds like you picked up a stray and can keep it or turn it over to a rescue.

RESCUE ! Apperently the owner doesn't care enough about the pup to keep it safe or to follow the laws in your area. I would not care what the owner has to say. If you have a Humane Society in your area that will take her or an Aminal shelter take the dog there. If he wants it bad enough he will have to pay to get the pup back. If not then maybe the dog would be better off with a new owner anyways. Just my opinion.

I have WHAT in my yard? :

This is Dane rescue where you are.

They may not be willing to take her without her being pure, but they;ll probably help. You picked up a stray with no tags. Anything neighbor said to you is simply heresay and can be discounted as such.

something else to consider:

-if she goes to rescue she will either be picked up by her owners who *MAY* start to be more responsible for her after this event (if even just to avoid fines!).

OR

-If her irresposible owners DON'T pick her up, then at least her odds of being adopted into a good home are much higher BEFORE she is an adult!

I'd take her to the local animal shelter...stray dog is a stray dog. I'd much rather have the owner "mad" at me than have a dead puppy on my conscious. Besides, if he cared for the puppy it wouldn't be running loose. So as far as the owner being "mad", who cares.
