How old is this bird... what are the housing conditions (and how are they affected by environmental temp you mentioned as being "cold" > how cold? > was the bird by itself or in with others (might possible have gotten pecked or if alone might indeed have become too chilled)

I guess it's wry neck what is that what can I do? I really want to save her but I don't know what this is? What causes it? Any help please I'm desperate to help her, she eats drinks poops ok. Is this going to kill her?

Is her head tilted hard to the side - like it's cramped, or it is almost flopping to the side?

When she was outside yesterday, was she able to get into any compost piles, fungus, fallen or over ripe berries or fruit? Did you guys guarantine after bringing her home? Any signs at all of a respiratory illness?

Also dlh's questions are quite important, so if you could please answer them. Otherwise we won't really be able to give much help because a twisted or limp neck and not walking fit a lot of different things.

Also what are you feeding her? Is her poop fine today? Was she exposed to the weather? Any fights when she was returned to the flock?

This chick is only in with 2 others the same age she has always been with them they were from the same flock and raised together, they are 3 months old, They are very clean as I clean my coop every other day completly and add new shavings every time at least 3 inches deep. Last night got dont to about 50 degrees. None of these birds free range as my roo will attack them. I only let them out with me standing there as gardian and protector as she is my favorite chick. Her head is tilted to the floor she eats poops and drinks ok. Right now she is in the "recovery room in the basement by herself. She was going to be in my son's first 4h show this morning but last night she was fine when I went down at 5 am for feeding I found her like this.
Would a picture help? I just want to help her.

I'm sorry hon, we still need the other information, too. So you're saying her neck is limp. We really need to know what she eats, has been eating for the last few weeks. And especially if she got into anything free range. It's very urgent and very very important. I'm waiting here for your reply.

(And yes a picture would really help). We're going to keep trying with you - just we need a little more info. Thanks.

By the way, does she have diarrhea, any change in droppings? Pull her feathers - do they come out easily? IS she shedding some in the cage?

She does not free range and is eating grower. There has only been 1 feather since yesterday. She poops eats and drinks on her own. Although I want to make sure so I hand feed her and medicine dropper her water to make sure. Last night was 50 degrees. her neck she can't seem to control but can hold it up for a few seconds on her own then she drops it and her whole body will shake like she is cold and her head goes back and forth rapidly for a second or two. She has eaten no berries or anything just grower mash. All my chickens have eaten out of this same bag no troubles and it is half gone.
. No dirreah no other symptoms. Oh and she only 3 months.

This picture shows her head on the floor

This was taken just last night before I put her in I took her out for a couple pictures to put on her 4h poster my son made as she was going to the 4h fair with us today.

If her neck is losing control, I would be very tempted to say that it's possibly something that she got into - a toxin. It could be from anything - a mushroom she found, a puddle of water, maggots by a flower pot, a compost pile, etc etc.

You could take the conservative approach to that possibility by doing a gentle flush of her system to hopefully flush out whatever she might have gotten into. There are true flushes using either epsom salts or molasses and they're very strong and very stressful. The one I would use instead would be a combination of a little babyfood applesauce, a tiny bit of molasses, and water as her water for 4 hours. Then electrolyte water for the next three days. This will give her a little runny droppings so you will want her to get yogurt daily for the next week, probably some vitamins (which since she's ill I'd suggest anyway).

More on that below.

There is a condition called torticollis that can be associated with vitamin deficiencies, illness, and it usually is more of a stiff-necked issue. But as of yet (particularly because of the stress of showing, exposure to other birds and via the judge) it can't be ruled out. Either she could have picked something up (depending on how long ago the show was) , or had possibly been exposed to something and the showing experience just made her immune system drop and she is now showing the symptoms.

Or it could be an injury.

In all cases, Vitamin E can possibly help, will NOT hurt - nor will a well rounded general vitamin package. For those two, I would recommend polyvisol baby vitamins (the non-iron-fortified formula, vitamin section at grocers or Walmart) 3 drops in the beak daily for a week. The vitamin E you would buy would be 400-700 iu's in strength, the oil capsules for humans. You will slit the end of the capsule and give her 2-3 drops in the beak daily for a week. Yogurt you'd give 1 tablespoon daily as a treat or mixed in with crumbles and water to make a damp (not wet) mash. I'd still give the vitamins separately to make sure she gets them, and I'd give them AFTER she eats a bite or two. There is also B vitamins in that vitamin which might help if this is a B vitamin problem, which I'm not convinced of yet.

I'm concerned that with the loss of control of her head that she might asperate if given liquids. You'll want to be very careful of that. Also notify us of any changes, like weakness of a wing or leg.

For the gentle conservative flush, mix a half teaspoon of molasses into a cup of very hot water. Stir to dissolve, and then cool. Dribble some of this into her beak if she won't drink on her own. If she will eat or drink on her own, you can use some more of that water to make a damp mash of crumbles, yogurt, 1/2 teaspoon applesauce for her to eat once. Then just regular crumbles dry or dampened with the molasses water - what ever she'll eat.

Only make this available for 4 hours, and let the molasses water be her only source of water until it's gone. Then water with electrolytes (pedialyte, or poultry electrolytes).

Try to keep her warm, calm, and quiet. I suspect her head going back and forth is her panicking because she can't control herself. But it could indicate something else.

Thank you so mush I will do this. I wanted to clear up somthing I was not clear on she has never been to a show as today would have been her first one. Also she has never free ranged before she has always been in her coop I only took her out to take a picture of her and put her right back in. She has never been outside other than a totaly enclosed run with a cage bottom that has a poop pan on the bottom so she does not touch the grass or anything to eat as it is also elevated.

Oh ok, I misunderstood. Silly me.

Well that might change things.. Are you certain that her feed didn't get wet/soured? If you are, do not do the flush.

In that case I'd do the vitamins as directed, the yogurt, and add a vitamin B complex vitamin tablet crushed into the feed (damp mash). I wouldn't do the molasses or the applesauce.

Has this chick been vaccinated for Marek's ever? Where was she from - a hatchery, breeder, home-grown?
