Help My silkie she has wry neck ! She is back outside picture update

She is from a breeder who does not vaccinate all my chickens come form the same breeder. None of them have ever been vaccinated. I know her food is good the other chickens are fine that are in with her and there ok I check there food and water 3 times a day. I am also home as a housewife and I spend ALOT of time with them she is very doccile though I am wondering if the barred rock is pushing her around? Although they have been together all this time she is so much larger than the the other 2 the sick silkie and the other partridge silkie in there but he is rooster who is at the fair right now and is also VERY docile. THANK YOU so much(three horses) for taking so much time with this I really appreciate it, my DH does not see the chickens through the same eyes as I do he things I'm nuts.

Well the feed might be perfectly fine, but sometimes silkies have problems with deficiencies. So it's inside the bird, not the feed.

I'm also a little worried about marek's, which is contagious if you have an active paralyzed bird. That's one reason that it would be good to do the vitamins and see if she improves - to rule that out.

On the vaccinations, well it's usually day one. Sometimes you can vaccinate after but once the bird has it, then the only way you can tell are via symptoms, ruling other things out, and then necropsy. The fact that she and the others weren't vaccinated means that this could well be Marek's and that the others could be at risk. But again it would be nice to rule it out.

I wish I could do more to help.

I"ll do the best I can.

My young silkie started doing the same thing this morning. What breeder did you get yours from, mine does not vaccinate either. PM me if you don't want to say. I'm just wondering if it might be a common factor...

And when I say same thing, looks identical to your girls neck.

I'll be watching this thread closely.

Incidentally a lot of breeders don't vaccinate. I used to not, but then again I didn't sell babies either. Knowing what I know now, I would. That's one of the only vaccinations I'd consider important enough to recommend. So a breeder not vaccinating doesn't mean they're bad. But it does mean that every bird you get from there is going to be lacking one little bit of insurance (not a full policy, but a little coverage) against the major signs of Marek's.

That being said, Marek's vaccinations can still be overcome if exposed to challenges great enough to overwhelm the vaccine, and if they're not vaccinated properly. That's why I make it a policy to keep babies away from adults until they're five months old.

I would still go with the vitamin treatment, particularly the E and B, and see if it's just a silky issue - or a line weakness in vitamin aborbtion, etc.

I'll look forward to updates - maybe from both of you?

Today she is the same her head is still out of control although she did hold it up enough to eat an entire bowl of food and drink some water. She also peeped at me today and not a sound from her yesterday as she is a really noisy bird when I come near normally. She has never been in with any older birds the other 2 in there came with her. I am getting my kids reaady now and headed to the store for polly vi tol.

chicks8 I am sorry you are having some problems. I really don't have answers for you but I did have a polish roo that was OK one day and his head was on the ground the next. I finally realized it was caused from an injury. I did the vitamins and kept him in a separate cage with another quiet pullet. They lived like that until adult hood. The one thing I did do is to build up the feeder to make it easier to get the food. When Logi fell he was 3 months old and he had trouble trying to get the food out of the dish. When he head was on the ground he would try to peck food from the floor. By building up the feeder he didn't have to lower his head so much and it didn't always fall over. My son just built a small box to fit a shallow plastic meat tray from walmart It was one of the samll white ones about 1 1/2" high. The box he built was 4" high and Logi was able to eat. He grew up to a fine rooster. He did have mating issues but he lived a very good life fhere. He belonged to my daughter and she sold him a few months ago. Hope this suggestion helps Micki

I really hope this chick pulls through, this has been a really hard 2 weeks for me animal wise. First I had to rehome my first chicken who was a beautiful wc blue polish who turned out to be yet another roo

. The I came home from camp and I wasn't home an hour before my dog gets hit by a car, he will be ok but it is going to take alot of time and nursing to heal him

. Then the morning of the fair I find my show chicken can't even lift her own head and I still don't know if she is going to pull through but she is my favorite chicken who sits in my lap while I read. When I went out this morning to drink my coffee on the deck and listen to my rooster crow he sounded wheezy and congested . On a good note my son's two alternate chickens both placed in his very first show

I had a polish chick that did that and I was told by my vet to buy the baby liquid vitamin and give as directed on the bottle. I did for about (3) weeks and she was fine. Vitamin deficiency was it.
