We just came back from vacation and found that three of our hens had laid their first eggs! Heres the bad part: one of the hens has had obvious trouble. Nobody who was watching them must have noticed.

When I went to let them out today, she stayed on her roost. Last night when we checked on them she looked wet . Now this morning, I see she is dirty and smelly all around the vent area and the vent area is open and swollen looking. Below is a pic. I picked her up immediately and she was very calm and allowed me to carry her into the house. She is eating a little yogurt and we are trying to get her to drink.

My kids just noticed worms under her feet on a towel we put her on. Anyone know what this could be? I'm scared!

I don't know but I'd wash her up and try to see is maybe an egg broke in her.If it is an egg broke you'll have to flush her out. Also what kind of worms? Could they be maggots?
Also just so no one complains you may want to put graphic picture in your title

. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will pop in soon.

Hi Shaggysgirl. Thanks for your reply, I'm actually taking her to my dogs vet who keeps chickens. Hopefully she'll be able to help. I'm not sure if they were maggots but they could have been. Maybe the vet will be able to tell. I'll write again after I see her.

I went through something similar in April with a Maran. It looks like that vent could be prolapsing.
Having maggots there is never a good sign.

Hi all, well, Baby bad wings as she is called around these parts had maggots in a wound that was on her belly, as well as a prolapsed vent. She was cleaned up, sutured, given antibiotics, fluids and pain meds. Poor baby, she was a great patient and hopefully will be on the mend. We're not sure if the two were related or not.

If the prolapse happens again, I will be asking a vet to remove her egg making machinery and she can live out her life with no further worries. Please say a prayer for her that she recuperates fully. Any advice on how to help her do that will be greatly appreciated.

You are an awesome chicken parent for taking your baby to the vet and to be willing to keep her strictly as a pet if she will be unable to lay in the future! Good for you!

I will be saying a little prayer for your chicken. I hope she has a speedy recovery. Chickens are fairly resilient and I hope she keep her strength through this difficult time. I am glad you did not hesitate to take her to the vet, you saved her life.
