I'm getting ready for new chickies come spring. I'm trying to decide how I want to keep them. I live outside of Charlotte, NC. Summers are hot and humid. Winters are normally pretty mild, the last 2 have been snowy and cold, but thankfully they tend to be short. Last frost is usually mid April and first last of October.

I have my version of "The Playhouse" coop. I'm thinking of using this for some Sebrights.

I'm thinking of redoing my big coop in the Open/Fresh-Air Style--something like this, though this is a dog kennel

Does anyone have a picture of their open/fresh-air coop they could share? Would like to have more ideas.



ETA---the big coop is 8x8 6ft in the front and 4ft in the back. It's no longer connected to the dog run. I'm thinking that it will be able to slide around like a super tractor when I re-do it

here is mine. has worked quite well the last 6 months. the floor is sand. the roofed side of it has 2 five foot roosts with a poop board under it. i have some big girls so i also used a sawed off pool slide ladder to help them climb up.

the whole thing is 5 feet by 16 feet or so. i keep 7 ladies in there but let them out to roam the front yard when i am home. works pretty well.
 
I don't have any pics - but I think open/fresh air coops are a great way to go. I use a converted rabbit hutch. Where I live in California the weather never gets too harsh, so most of the year the girls get great ventilation and wonderful air flow. During the couple of months that we do get cooler, breezy weather, I have storm-like shutters that I put up to block the cold wind.

It looks very easy to build and with just a few adjustments, could serve well for a few chickens. It seems that you could also make it portable. I think you've seen my open air coop, but I'll post it here again. It's almost one year old now and I'm very pleased with it.

I've seen your coop before, VERY nice. I like how you have done the attached run. We both know how over powering the Arizona sun can be. It's very similar to what I want to do with "The Playhouse" coop but I don't know if mine is deep enough. It's plenty heavy enough. All 2x6 deck boards and 2x4's which were free. It has never held chicken, lol. Held my Bobwhite quail which is why it is open in the front of the coop. I was in the process of painting, putting in a new floor and raising the run roof when first chemo and then winter hit. I'd love to see a couple of picture of your coop box and how you have it set up. I'm think a community nestbox on that one side where the access door is.

I have rabbit hutch that I use as a brooder, hadn't thought about using it as a coop. Will give that some thought too.
