This horse came to be friends with Daizy/my horse today. Star has not had good care lately. She has put back on some weight but needs more. How much more do you think she needs to gain. She is 6 and TB. She is registerd and tatooed but can't read the tatoo. The owner wants to get her papers or a copy and her history. He does not know how to do that neither do I.

Star is an ex race horse.

I have a question about beet pulp. Does it HAVE to be soaked before giving it? What ever Star get my horse will get and I don't know if it is good for them whole and dry. I thought I heard it had to be soaked. They have not been soaking it I don't think.

Yes it does, my dad soaks it for a few hours in warm water in a 5 gal bucket. If not it will expand in their gut and can hurt them much less soaks up water and dehydrats them.

DOn't risk not soaking it. If the horse eats it a little quickly or doesn't happen to drink a lot of water with it he will choke. Vet says 8 out of 10 of his choke cases are from beet pulp. The other 2/10 are other similar fine dry feeds.

It is also a very good way to get water into them when it's cold out and they aren't necessarily drinking enough.

We pour boiling water on it and let it soak for 8 hrs and cool off before we feed it. It's a very good feed to use.

The new horse looks like it is in terrible condition coat wise, hard to see whether it's thin or not.

Do not leave halters on the horses when they are turned out - they can injure themselves or each other very badly.

Do not put hay piles so close together or they will fight and kick each other.

Rice Bran can also be used to add weight, it basically adds calories without a lot of bulk. My Halter Gelding (16 hands 1400lbs) only gets about 1/2 cup twice a day. It is inexpensive as well about $10 per bag and lasts awhile.
I have used Beet Pulp before, it works, but you do need to soak it, I always made the next meal ahead (EX: Made Dinner after I fed Breakfast) that way it soaked a good long time.

@ welsummer I don't leave the halter on, it was just on for the time I was out there today. Star's coat is a mess. We worked on it some today but it will be a process for sure. When it gets warm enough she will get a bath....we think we might shave her belly is all matted with feces for now till she can be bathed.

I will soak any beet pulp, if I give any of what is left.

They seem to get along and eat very well together....which will be a very nice change.

The owner said her hip points and withers were showing pretty bad a bit back....the rear pic looks to me like she is under weight on the side of her leg more noticeable on the left side/butt/hip area to me it is dipped in a lot. Is that normal?

If you mix it with regular feed and you don't over do it with the beet pulp, it would be fine to give dry. Just mix it up really well and avoid feeding big clumps. It's about 50/50 here with people soaking and not soaking, and most who don't soak mix it with a pelleted diet (Ourselves included!)
