Hi,
I have a RIR who will be one year next week.
Lately she has been a bit off looking and acting.
I don't know if she has ever laid an egg. Before winter - no. We have 2 other chickens with her. One is an Amer (blue egg, so we know hers) the other an orphington, and we've seen her lay etc. Never really got the action from 'Red'
So recently though I think we got maybe 3 eggs from her as we saw some new smaller brown eggs.
Then she suddenly doesn't hang with the other girls quite as much. (they free range)

She will lay in the middle of the yard as if she couldn't stand to walk another step.
Her eyes are closed while she stands, like she is sleeping.
She has excessive droppings down her back feathers which really stink.
So I posted once and someone suggested egg bound.

Today we gave her a warm sitz bath. I felt around on her and could not feel an egg. Checked in her vent too, nothing hard in there.
Cleaned her up. She seems like she is missing feathers around her vent area. It does not look red or swollen, there is no blood anywhere.
We now have her contained in the house. She does eat and drink, but is thin as can be.
Not much noise from her either.

Other chickens seem fine.
The other thing is that when she is standing, often time I think she looks like a vulture where her head may be up and it is a straight slope down to her tail. Her back does not level off parallel with the ground at all. So her vent drops to the low point.
She is very lethargic. No struggle or excitement when you pick her up.

She is normally housed in a 4'x5' coop with two other hens. They get out pretty much every day to run around.
I am not sure what else to say, but something just doesn't seem right with her.
Any thoughts would be great.
Thankyou

Here is a picture of her too. she just had a bath and is not dry yet.

I am sorry that I can't help you since I don't know a lot about chicken diseases but I she does sound like she is sick and I would separate her from your other chickens. I hope someone who has more knowledge than me can help you. I would at least see if you can get her to eat some cooked egg to see if you can get some food in her. I would also see if you could give her some electrolytes in her water. Keep an eye on how much she is drinking as well. Not wanting to drink can be a symptom of different diseases. Keeping my

I just came here to ask this same question. I have a 13 week Black Copper Maran who is acting the same way today. I went in the coop this morning to feed and change the water and I noticed she was still up on the perch sleeping. I walked over and petted her and picked her up to check her. I put her down and she walked around a bit and scratched around some. I went back out after lunch and she is hid in the corner up in the nesting boxes and isn't trying to run from me like she normally does. She is standing and sleeping like the pic of your chicken and staying off to her self. I hope your hen gets better soon and we both get some answers.

I've lost 2 hens like this. I kept the second alive for a few weeks, but she died just this am. I caged her and kept her warm, fed her eggs and chick starter. I added those baby vitamins, poly vi sol with no iron and karo to her water. She got better, but never was totally fine again. I'm new to chickens, but my first year was tough- I'm beginning to think that sometimes they just die. I like to try to save them at least.

Good luck!

I quarantined her this morning because when I went out to feed she still just didn't seem right to me. She did try to run from me when I tried to catch her. I added vitamins and electrolytes to her water and put the cage inside of the building so the wind can't get to her. She is mad now and trying to figure out how to get out of the cage. I will make her some eggs in a few minutes. Sorry you lost your chickens. Chicks47, how is your hen?

Sounds a lot like parasites. Check her good for mites, then look into some Ivermectin for parasite treatment.

Red is still in the house. She still nibbles a bit and drinks. But mostly just sits in her cage. She is not active. I give her 'treats' but she is not interested. Then after a while she might nibble a bit. Her back end is down more, almost like she is sitting like a dog.
I will be checking in at our local feed store today, but I think it is inevitable that she will pass eventually due to this issue.

'Chickencrazy101' and 'Augustwest' have you come across this thread in your search?

After searching through the forum here it doesn't sound real promising and I think we will end up putting her down this weekend.

We actually did have mites a week ago. She was behaving a little odd before we found them too. We got all that cleaned up though and I think pretty quickly. We had one hen brooding in the nestboxes who had the mites the worst I think, but she is just fine as is our other hen. 'Red' I think had/has other issues. We have given them all some ACV in their water too after the mites.
We have been keeping an eye out.. but have not seen a return of any yet.

Do their back ends go down with parasites?
