I know this subject has been beaten to death but honestly, no wonder there is so much confusion as to what people have. The hatcheries don't label their birds correctly and if they do they use the wrong picture...

First picture on the page labeled Aracauna. Looks like it has a tail, and muffs, and a beard to me...

And they get really defensive and huffy when you try to enlighten them, too.

Edited to say, not specifically Mt Healthy, but any hatcheries dont like to be put on the spot and corrected.

And that i so dumb. Makes me want to take my copy of The Standard of Perfection, photocopy the pictures of the Aracaunas and Ameracaunas out and send them to all the major hatcheries. I would love for them to honestly say that's what they have... Now if they want to advertise the birds as blue/green egg layers with a mixed lineage of Aracauna/Ameracauna/Easter Egger that would be fine. Birds might be rumpless, tufted, bearded, muffed, tailed, whatever... But how many people have ever gotten a tufted or rumpless bird out of a hatchery's Aracauna/Ameracuana chicks... *sigh*

I got a tufted EE from MMH, but she DEFINITELY was not rumpless! A second one was white with "freckles" and had the beginnings of ear-tufts (but a full tail), and the third looked more like a pheasant or other gamebird than a chicken!

I got 3 from TSC and after consulting the Americuana website, they must be EE's. I will try to get a pic later but they are grey and white speckled, white necks and mostly grey heads. One has ear tufts, one has ear tufts and a beard, one has neither, all have green feet. I wanted ee's anyway but they should sell them as what they are.

I like the old guy this last weekend that said to me while looking at my EE's I had for sale.... "We ordered 15 Aracondas, the ones you probably call Easter Eggers, cause the grandkids love em!"

I just smiled and nodded because, honestly.... what does it matter sometimes?

It would be nice though if the hatcheries could at least get it right!!!!!

What is with all the confusion over the name Orpington??? Is there a hatchery out there marketing Orphingtons??? I seem to be getting that a lot lately.

I think they count on the confusion to sell more of them, and also..... I think either they, or they assume their buyers, have no real care or want for the real deal. I mean, hatchery birds are what they are. They're not meant to be show quality or meet any strict standard. So in their eyes.... if you don't mind getting a sub-par chicken of another breed... what's the difference between an Araucana, Ameraucana or EE? They all lay blue/green eggs

And another problem is referencing the tufts and muffs incorrectly. Ear tufts look nothing like cheek muffs. They are two entirely different genes. Folks say their birds have tufts, but it is actually muffs.

Tufts are feathers that grow out of the ear off of a finger-like pendacle and are only on Araucana. Muffs are the fluffy cheeks EEs and Ameraucana are so common for.

Here is a good example of ear tufts:

And an example of full muffs/beard on an EE roo.
