My broody was out with her three chicks and Zane's little brother, Mace, is one of them. He's 4 weeks old now. When I went out to check on them, Mace was sitting under a tree by himself, so I picked him up. I noticed his little foot had a scratch so I took him in and put Neosporin on it then returned him to his mama. In a few minutes, I saw that my hand had more blood on it than there should have been so I had a hunch to check Mace over. I found that the skin from behind his skull was ripped in a sheet down the entire stretch of his neck. It seems fairly superficial, perhaps he caught his head in something and pulled it out, ripping the skin.
We did not use peroxide and didnt have Betadine, so we just slathered antibiotic ointment down the wound and brought him inside the house. There's vitamins and electrolytes in his water and he'll just stay in a rubbermaid-type brooder till he heals. If there is anything else I need to do, please let me know. I've never had an injury like this before on any of my birds.
Thank goodness I had a hunch about him and saw the blood smear on the palm of my hand or he might have been pecked to death by morning!

Geez, did I need one more thing to worry about???

If it isn't one thing than it is another isn't it? Sorry, can't help as I think I would have done what you are doing right now. Is the flap of skin in position? I mean does it need to be taped in place or stitched?

Hi cynthia, so sorry about the little guy. Do you have a website for your birds?

No, Dilly, I don't have a website, sorry.
Carrie, I dont see an actual flap of skin. It's just raw and the feathers and surface layers ripped off. It's just the entire back of his poor little neck. We couldnt even find where he did it. Could have been anywhere, I guess.

You gotta be kidding me?! Pretty soon you're going to end up with a bunch of little padded cells for them. Or maybe one for yourself.

Good grief you've had a run of bad luck.

I would do what you are doing for now and watch close for infection. I really don't think there is much more you can do to treat it at this point.

Hopefully, within a few days he is doing fine. You sure have had enough troubles this year without more!

Last fall I had that happen with a young pullet. I think she stuck her head between the gate and fence and when she pulled back it caught on something. Her wound was more on the side of her head and upper neck. It took awhile, but it eventually healed up.

If you need to, I would close it with strips of hair tape or little bandaids to keep it clean and together.

Geez, if trouble is supposed to come in 3's you are way over your allotted quota! Don't much like the idea of multiples of 3's

Sounds like you handled the situation quite well. Hope the little guy will be alright.

Having not had a broody, will she yearn for her baby and vice versa? If so, maybe visiting hours?! Altho the poor little fella was sitting off to himself when you found him...
