Chick with skin ripped off (WARNING! GRAPHIC PIC ADDED!)

I had one of my little barred roos get attacked by another and ripped his flesh clean off from mid scalp to mid neck almost 2" across ,no skin left, could see his bottom jaw points moving,AWWWW. I was sure we was going to die, but he got up and started eating! So I decided to give him a shot at living. I rinsed what was left with saline to clean it, then rinsed with beadine, and smothered what I could with Nitroferazone,( horse neosporine). I kept him in a cage to be near water and food because his one eye was injured too, and to keep him clean. I kept an eye on him and dripped beadine on it every few days. I also put Tylan in his water. He's almost healed now after a month. Feathers are growing back, I don't know how. They are such good healers...Best wishes;)

Here's poor little Mace. chickenzoo, be very careful putting anything for horses and dogs on your birds. Mace's daddy died suddenly from a reaction to a wound ointment made for horses and dogs. It had no warning on the label that it would be fatal to birds, just not to put on animals providing food for human consumption.

Ouch. If it were me I would put a good dab of blu kote on him. It is a antibacterial/virus and fungal agent. I had a hen with a really bad place - like another hen tried to eat the 'oyster' from her back. I coated her with blu kote and in less than a week it had healed over completely.

I try to be carefully with things, but this was unexpected and I didn't have anything else at the time to use. I was hoping that since I've prob. obsorbed enough of it over the years, and it hadn't killed me, he'd survive. LOL;)

I was in the same boat, just put some on his wattles, which had some small scabs-his girls were pecking them and I'd tried everything. Just avoid things with benzocaine or that are highly aromatic full strength. Dont want anyone to have the heartache I had.

Thanks, I'm sure he'll be fine. He's being a good little houseguest right now. Thank goodness it's warm enough that he doesn't need supplemental heat! He's doing well, but that boy sure looks like a barred Turken, LOL.
