Kentucky people

Well, there were some people that had gone onto the government land yesterday, they were coming back up to their truck when me and Cris were out in the pasture looking for duck eggs. Guess what they saw about a mile back by the river???

We used to get bears right in the city up in Michigan sometimes - it was more common in later years right before we moved. Their habitat is getting taken out, so they move (especially in spring, the bachelor boys move around more) looking for new territory.

I would feel safer with a young male than a breeding female or one with cubs.

Well I got the lower cell cleaned out before the storm hit - now I just have to clean the top coop for the babies to go out.

Mr. Speckles and his ladies are all moved in down below - they were diggin' on the extra space outside to play in. The only one of his girls yet to move is the broody who is about to hatch any day now (maybe today).

Last I checked, Miss Piggy still had only 4 babies, will have to go down to see how she's doing now since it cleared up a little. She is sitting on extra eggs, though, cause everyone kept laying in her nest again - I put the other broody into a cage, so no one could bother her, but I only had one large cage, so Miss Piggy was out of luck. I need to keep an eye out at Sano for another large cage in case I have two broodies at once again.

Well, gonna go see if I can at least clean out the built in brooder in the coop - so I can move the meaties out there today.

I'm gonna be so achey tomorrow morning!!

If I have a good hatch on the ten white babies, you get first dibs of the extras (I can't keep them all - was thinking maybe to keep two or so - maybe three).

I never thought I'd want them - too loud, and such - I had never really seen them up close, they are so cute and sweet (and my khaki girl is not loud at all - the silver girl was, but the blue girl was reasonably quiet, also, unless something disturbed her).

Now that I've had these ones, I just want MORE!!! Heck, I would give up the Swedish just to fill the waterfowl pen with Call Ducks

I've already cut myself back to three Swedish so I got enough room for the calls
lau.gif
(when I got the Swedish my plan was to keep about 6 or 8 of them

)

I'll keep ya updated on the hatch (when the eggs arrive, that is
lau.gif
)
I hope the PO doesn't scramble them!!

Yeah!

Oh

My

Gawd.

I am so tired and achey. After I got off here earlier, I cleaned the top coop (I wanted those chicks out of here badly
lau.gif
) It wouldn't have been so bad, but after the duck coop (heavy wet stuff) I am wiped out.

Then I wrestled chicks and got them all out there, and now I can sit back for about a half hour before I have to go grab Little Joe and DD and put them in with George. They insisted on sleeping in the coop they had last night (the cleaned one) but now Mr. Speckles is in there - I don't know how he'll react in the morning to the ducks. I was hungry for dinner and tired, though, so I let them in the run and turned off the lights inside to delay any fighting.

I'm glad they liked the new run, though, cause I'm thinking of building the call ducks their own run that goes into a coop - it'll keep 'em safer than being out in the open top waterfowl pen. Everyone else is bigger than they are, so probably do ok without being totally enclosed (they'll have a coop to be locked in at night). This way no more call duck flying off with hawks.

Made tacos for dinner - ate like a horse
lau.gif
I guess I built up an appetite (didn't eat anything all day).

My shoulders ache, my lower back aches, I'm ready for bed.
big_smile.png
but I got the chickens swapped and the coops cleaned Woohoo!!!

Now I just have to clean the hatchery room.

I still have about 30 chicks inside
lau.gif
but they are too young to go out (plus my three duckies). believe me - after 170 chickens in your house, 30 is nothing.

Well, gonna check a couple other threads then go swap Joe and DD around and go to bed.

Morning all -

Well, I'm already loving having the chicks outside - chores this morning went a half hour faster than usual
lau.gif

They all did great last night, they are settled in really well out there and they have stopped picking each other (so much more room for them!!).

Miss Piggy got off her nest of eggs - I guess 4 babies is all she's gonna get this time - she had way too many eggs to hatch them all - next time I can put her into the brooder coop when she sets eggs, so she won't have everyone laying in her nest box again.

Still no hatches on the other broody - but anytime now.

I woke up this morning, though, feeling like I had been beaten by a baseball bat
lau.gif
I was so stiff and sore - but since I got up and did chores it's working itself out a little.
Now I get to clean the hatchery room today - but that won't be as bad. I already got part of it done last night.

Well, I need to run to town - got to hit Day & Day before they close and grab a bale of wood shavings - nest boxes need something and I am out of hay (bales).

later all -

I got good news from the vet today. My pullet tested negative for viral Infectious larynotrechietis (ILT). It did test positive for bacterial ILT. Evidentally ILT is a set of symptoms that can be caused by a highly contagious herpes virus or by a bacteria infection. So I get to keep all my birds and just do some disinfecting to clear up any bacteria left around. PRAISE GOD!

That's great news!!

If the vet didn't suggest anything, I'd go with Oxine - it's sort of pricey but worth it!! The stuff is fantastic and you can even spray it right onto the chickens (unlike bleach which doesn't kill as many bacteria and is unsafe to use with the chickens present).

You'll probably have to mail order it, but it's not bad - probably a quart size would do ya (rather than buying a whole gallon).

Meri, those are great pictures, I love your whole set up and wish I had the land to do it!!
Since I'm so new at this I just have to ask how old those chicks you put out in your coop are. I love having my little ones inside but at the same time we are going to have to put them in something bigger within a day or two and I just don't know if I want half of my living room taken up. My chicks are two weeks old and since they're my first I am certainly babying them but would they be okay in a coop with one or two heat lamps? Sorry for the newbie question.

Also, are some of those light brahmas? That was the rare breed I got when I ordered mine and am desperately hoping is a girl. They are gorgeous!
