Kentucky people

My fan was working just fine, but I had unplugged it for a while. So now that I try to turn it back on, it won't work. But come to think of it, it would make some funny noises when I would take the top of the bator off. Oh well, I guess I'll have to get another one.

Boy we had a bad night last night. We are learning as we go. We currently have 4 seperate brooders for chicks. Ranging from day old to 3 weeks. And yes seperated by age. We have a brooder that is 8 foot long and about 2 foot deep. Only the ends are boxed in with screen doors. We only had 1 heat bulb in there. They had been doing fine with that. But since the temps dropped so low last night I guess they were really huddled up. We last 13. I guess trampled/smuthered. I am not sure how many is in there. But when they are spread out they have plenty of room. Now they have another heat bulb on the other end and the screens with be covered through the night. It is so hard keeping the temp just right. I am considering getting a reptile thermostat so that it will cut off and then back on when the temp drops. Here are our brooders.

We are in process of making 2 more, but these are intended for the older ones. The complete front is going to be covered with wire. We have strips of mats to put across when needed.

FYI I use regular house thermostat in my brooders they work
great. And they are adjustable when you drop the temps 5° per week.

Does the house thermostat plug in?? And how expensive are those. I am going to need a couple. I thought I could just plug in the lamp and they would move accordingly. For the most part that works. But then they end up getting tooo hot.

After reading on some of the sales on here, I noticed that people put on their that their flocks are tested. Can someone tell me about this? Like NPIP?? I dont do any kind of testing on anything, but will if I should be. I intend on taking birds to the upcoming sale in Cookeville.

The NPIP tests for two diseases, so it is not all that great. But if you have your flock NPIP certified, you can only get birds or eggs from other flocks that have the NPIP certification. I can't remember which 2 diseases it tests for, but they aren't very common ones anymore, I don't believe. It wouldn't hurt to have it, but it is not necessary.

I think I have made a new color! Now I just need to figure out how

I have had 3 bantam chicks hatch out in the past few days that were all black with red faces! I can't believe it! And these babies are mixed! Too bad they are all free rangers, it would be almost impossible to figure out who the parents are!

Sloopy having a bad hair - um... feather day --- she's dry - just sticky, needs a brush up with the baby brush.

Hi,
I'm new here - from southern KY. Wow! There are 723 pages on the KY thread so I doubt I'll get to read all of them but I'm looking forward to reading through some at least and maybe finding someone I know:)

We're a family of 5 living in the Grayson Co. area and we currently have several different breeds of chickens as well as a few ducklings and a trio of geese.

Kristen
