I have the waterfowl pen partially done - but I am finishing off part of it as a run for the bottom cell of the coop - gonna put all the ducks into that as soon as it's done, so I can clean the coops out really well, then finish the waterfowl part of the pen.

The ducks have been spastic lately - I think they are getting too big to be cooped up, but I am working on it - just this dang weather keeps slowing me down (and not having a truck for three weeks)

Ya know, looking at pics of Squishy when he was hatched, he was almost twice as big as Spiffy when she hatched.

I do recall that my khaki girl was much more "standard" than the blue girl was - she was sort of longer necked and not as round a head as the khaki girl is.

about a bird influenza in Kentucky! I thought I'd post it and let you all see for yourselves. Being new to the chicken thing I'm not sure how common this is but it scared me! (Hugs chicks tightly)

I have a Buff Laced Polish chick that I need to rehome I *think* it's a roo...which is why I need to let it go. I will be SO disappointed if I'm wrong. It's parents were BEAUTIFUL! I would love to keep it, but I'm really leaning towards roo, and would rather find it a new home now then wait until I'm any more attached.

I'm in far eastern Ky (Pikeville) and could only arrange to meet someone close to Huntington WV or could wait and meet along my way to Lexington sometime.

I wanted to send out a word of warning to my fellow Kentuckians. Three weeks ago I bought 4 adult chickens from someone I knew in the area(not a BYC'r) One of the pullets (who layed 2 eggs in 3 weeks)began sneezing two days later, then coughing, then bubbly eyes, then spraying, hacking blood all over the coop wall while I watched in horror. I put her out of her misery and sent her body to UK for testing. All the BYC'rs on the disease thread think its ILT, a reportable contagious virus in which most states cull your flock. I hope KY doesnt want to kill my pigeons too, although they cant get it. Please becareful where you buy your birds. I think from now on I will only buy from NPIP folks or cert'd hatcheries, if I ever get chickens again....

I'm so sorry to hear about this...I'm eager to hear the results...My friend and I bought some hens from a man in Richmond Ky who regularly attends the swaps and auctions local to him. Her birds started dying quickly and she had a necropsy done and it was found to have IC and something called Avian Leukosis Sarcoma....We both had to rehome our entire flocks and some of hers were euthanized.

Then we waited several months before getting new chicks and only after thoroughly sanitizing the coops, runs, equipment, etc...

It was a HUGE ordeal. Not a great way to be introduced to chicken keeping either. I am now EXTREMELY careful about where my birds come from.

Was she around your other birds? Andora and I both contacted people from the state Ag department and spoke with them at length about how to clean up the coops and prevent this from happening again. They were very helpful!

Edited to add: Our birds also had depressed laying cycles...Out of the 8 or 9 birds I had, one laid every other day but she was RAGGED and OLD and her eggs weren't a good quality. Andora had one hen that laid every day for a week or two and then never laid again...we had these birds for almost 6 months!​

I would like to have some buff laced polish, but that is a long way to go for just a roo. I have some golden laced but no buff laced. I would like to have all 4 colors of them.

I love the way they look.
