Kentucky people

I wanted to send out a word of warning to my fellow Kentuckians. Three weeks ago I bought 4 adult chickens from someone I knew in the area(not a BYC'r) One of the pullets (who layed 2 eggs in 3 weeks)began sneezing two days later, then coughing, then bubbly eyes, then spraying, hacking blood all over the coop wall while I watched in horror. I put her out of her misery and sent her body to UK for testing. All the BYC'rs on the disease thread think its ILT, a reportable contagious virus in which most states cull your flock. I hope KY doesnt want to kill my pigeons too, although they cant get it. Please becareful where you buy your birds. I think from now on I will only buy from NPIP folks or cert'd hatcheries, if I ever get chickens again....

Hey matt y can you at least tell us what town/city you bought them from?
Thanks for the heads up.

Campbellsville, KY .Unfortunately I think he frequents shepardsville often.

This is why I don't buy adult birds anymore - Campbellesville is so close to me, I'm sure the guy probably goes to Sano every friday.

The last adult birds I bought were from Eli and I trust him totally - otherwise, it's eggs or hatchery chicks for me from now on.

I am hoping by next spring I'll have an enclosed flock (stuff goes out, but not in) and will be hatching anything I need to add to my own ladies and gents. Actually by the end of the month I should be there - got my dellies and brahmas coming by the end of April. Once they are old enough to lay, I'll have all the extras I can deal with.

At most I'll maybe buy some "deal of the day" chicks to sell or eat in the fall. But I probably won't even need to do that.

Sorry ya got a bad bird - it happens a lot nowadays.

I wonder if it was that one guy that tried to trade me those sick ones for my BR? You remember him Meri? Need to find out where he is from, if he goes again.

Yeah, I thought of that when Matt said Campbellesville - I figured he was at Sano at some point, and I recall you saying the one guy tried to swap ya sick birds.

wow, is it really like 12:30 almost?
lau.gif
wasted this morning away, didn't I? been reading on closed flocks (BYC thread) and watching some movie about how Obama is a puppet of secret societies

... had to stop that one for a bit, got too "evil conspiracy" even for me. I'll watch the rest later.

Squishy and another chick escaped the water trough bin last night at some point
lau.gif
found them running around the room this morning (thank goodness the door was closed) and Squishy was having a hissy fit peeping to get back into the bin. I put him side by side with Spiffy yesterday - he is like 4 times her size!! (and he's not even three weeks old yet, I don't think.) Spiffy is tiny - but then her mama was smaller than the blue hen, and the egg was smaller, too. Spiffy is even smaller than the chicks she is in with who are the same age as she is. She'll outgrow them fast enough, but it's odd to see her so tiny in there with those fluffy chicks and know she is the same age.

oh, btw, Shelley, I just missed ya yesterday

I left the PO and passed ya going out that way, I was on my way to Day & Day to get feed.

Yeah, I hear ya -

I'm at the point now that I am even unsure of chicks coming in from other sources (other than hatcheries - even the feedstore chicks make me slightly nervous, but I am usually there to pick them out of the box as soon as they come in from the PO).

Paranoid, maybe, but I have gotten my flock to just about the point that I want to maintain it, and I dont want to have to start over.

Both times that I got chicks at Day & Day this year were when I was there to get them straight out of the PO boxes when they came in the door.
