What kind of geese do you have? (and all the others of course!

Honestly, I have no idea. My f-i-l bought them, didn't like them for whatever reason and DH brought them home and turned them loose on the pond. They seem really happy and we enjoy watching them (when the weather cooperates). The two geese are solid white and the gander is white with black tips on his wings.

Except for a few plain red hens and 2 BRs, the chickens are a mixture of mostly week old to month old chicks. We have some white leghorn, NH red, black star, and EEs at the moment. The ducklings are from the flea market (never let the children visit the flea mkt right before Easter. lol) and are still just yellow fuzz balls but I'm guessing they will be white ducks.

As you can see, I have a lot to learn yet about identifying specific breeds.

I have never been that way. I had to mapquest it to even know where you are. I guess about 1 1/2 away. I guess you are close enough to go to Sano.

:::::clapping my hands::::::

DuckyBoys said her call eggs are fertile now, so she's shipping me out 10 of them (whites) WooHoo!!!!!

I'm hooked on those dang call ducks, now
lau.gif
they are so tiny and adorable!!

I'll have quite the rainbow of them - two blues, a black, a khaki, a silver and now the whites
big_smile.png

I've heard they have a peach type color - I'll bet those would be pretty!!

One more day with tons of chickens in my house - the run is done, the coop just needs cleaning and I can swap chickens (then finish the rest of the waterfowl pen).

Oh, and Shelly, I'm not going to Sano tomorrow (if they even have it, since it's Good Friday) cause it's supposed to pour down rain - gonna spend the day getting chickens out of the house instead.

Sloopy is now fluffy, so I'll get some newer pics of her without the 80's geri curl look

I think she's actually a tiny bit smaller than Spiffy, if that is possible.

If I have a good hatch on the ten white babies, you get first dibs of the extras (I can't keep them all - was thinking maybe to keep two or so - maybe three).

I never thought I'd want them - too loud, and such - I had never really seen them up close, they are so cute and sweet (and my khaki girl is not loud at all - the silver girl was, but the blue girl was reasonably quiet, also, unless something disturbed her).

Now that I've had these ones, I just want MORE!!! Heck, I would give up the Swedish just to fill the waterfowl pen with Call Ducks
big_smile.png

I've already cut myself back to three Swedish so I got enough room for the calls
lau.gif
(when I got the Swedish my plan was to keep about 6 or 8 of them

I'll keep ya updated on the hatch (when the eggs arrive, that is

)
I hope the PO doesn't scramble them!!

I have a question for you duck folks. My wife and I had got some ducks for her mom two years back. 3 mallard,1 swedish and 3 cambells. As her pond began to dry up the mallards soon began to fly off to the nieghboors cattle ponds. Soon the others began to follow them (walking of course). To the point that they came by at night for feeding. Eventually they vanished. Coyotes I am sure. Were the mallards a "bad" wild influence on the others? If all she had were the non fliers could this happen? I ask because once my current issues are cleared up I may get into ducks instead. But I dont want them to waddle off to the neighboors pond. I am thinking that if I get real heavy non fliers and several wading pools maybe they will never find the pond. any thoughts?

Well, it's looking like it might clear up enough out there to go to Sano after all - I won't make a decision probably until this afternoon, though.

I want to go - I need to get rid of some of the chicks and ducks.

I need to do chicks (food/water) still this morning, and then I get to go clean the lowest cell of the bottom coop (fun. NOT!)
But I want to get it done so I can re-arrange chickens and get some of these chicks out of my house.

lau.gif
you should see my arms - all covered in little nicks and scratches from the dang chicken wire.

I amn so tempted to just go and clean the top coop - chase the big chickens into the run, and put the babies out anyway - then clean that bottom coop for the big chickens and move them. I SO want these babies out of my house!!!

Note to self - NEVER again have over a 100 chicks in your house for more than a week or two. I'm happy I'll have the brooder coop, now, so if I ever have that many again I'll have a place to put them besides my hatching room. At one point I had 170 chicks in there - I think I have it down to about 100 or so right now. All at various ages from 1 week old to 4 week old. Plus 5 meat chickens

The dust is incredible. The smell is worse - I can't keep up with all that Poop!! It's a full time job, for sure. Good thing I'm retired and at home to deal with it.

Well, my ducks don't wander much - the geese try to - just because we are on a ridge and they honk across the holler and hear their own echo and go looking for the "other geese".

They stay pretty close to the pools I have out there, though, usually. I think as long as you didn't get fliers and had a pool for them (or two) they would stick around no problem. Unless the neighbor is close enough for them to SEE the pond and hear the neighbor's ducks and geese - then ya might have a problem.

I'm building a pen for mine (had planned originally to free range them) simply for their own protection. I think if I let them loose they would stay around (I have swedish and calls) but the dog doesn't understand that just cause they make that cool sound doesn't mean you are supposed to "squeak" them. (the dog does fantastic with chickens, ducks are a whole other issue for him).

I was gonna get some muscoveys, but probably won't just because they fly.

eta - not sure if it is ALL chicken diseases, but ducks don't get MOST chicken diseases, they are much hardier and healthier than chickens.

Honestly, I don't think ducks get any chicken diseases, except maybe cocci, but I'm not even sure about that one. Ducks have their own diseases that they get, but it is very uncommon, they are pretty hardy.

Matt~~If you do decide to get ducks, all you would need is a short fence to put around where you want them to stay and they will stay put. I would think they would stick around by the wading pools, but they do like to explore. So if they happened to find the neighbor's ponds they might still go there. You could get mallards again, you would just have to keep their wings clipped or get them pinioned as babies so they couldn't fly off. But it would probably be best to have some kind of enclosure for them anyway, even if it is just for at night, so nothing can get them. Mine have no pen or coop, but they have 24/7 access to the pond, so unless there are snappers in there, or a hawk or owl comes swooping in, they are safe. Plus dad's dog keeps other predators away.
