I just got a puppy from petfinder, they try to save as many as they can, so I am asking you if you need a puppy think about them. Also they just sent me an email today if you live in or around this area and want a dog or a cat you might want to consider this. And you can get a puppy if you do not want an adult dog, some are even pure breed. Mine is a Great Pryelee. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

We do have a transport this week. Please remember we can not transport puppies right out of the shelter. Please help these dogs, ALOT of good dogs that need another chance! The shelter is Columbus County Animal Shelter in Whiteville, NC.Their address is 288 Legion Dr Whiteville, NC 28472. Hours are 8:30-5Mon-Thurs, 12-5 Fri. They euthanize on Friday mornings. Adoption feeis $25/dog or cat

I think it's great that you adopted a dog!! You saved it's life. I just adopted a cat not to long ago from my county's shelter!

I got my Border Collie mix through Petfinder. I travelled from Albany, NY to the Mahoning pound in Ohio to get her because she was a black dog and black dogs are put to death the most. Mahoning pound also uses a method called "heartstick". Its exactly what it sounds like. A knitting needle type device stuck into the heart.

When I heard that, myself and 3 other people went and rescued 30 dogs from that pound. It was a 15 hour drive just to get there but it was so worth it to save 30 lives!!

I agree about the black dogs, I was told the same. We went out looking for a dog for our family, knew we wanted to go to a rescue, and thought we'd find a cute little lab or something.

And one of the women at the office (the local vet has a rescue here) and we ended up with a black and white pit bull.

NOT what we imagined and what we planned on getting..... but she is THE BEST DOGGIE!

NOT advocating heartstick, it is horrible and inhumane. Intended to be used ONLY on sedated animals (and most of the time in shelters the animal is NOT sedated). BUT, this is a bit of misinformation. It is not a knitting needle like device stuck into the heart, it is an injection of the euthanasia drug directly into the heart using a hypodermic needle. Horribly painful and not an appropriate method of euthanasia of a nonsedated animal. It should be illegal. There are very few instances where it would be necessary, like a VERY small animal (mice, hampsters, chinchillas maybe) in which you could not get a vein ... and even then the animal is supposed to be sedated.

I was misinformed then by the people at Mahoning. They're the ones that told me about heartstick and I just about got sick on the phone with them. That's why we drove to Ohio to get the dogs. It still makes me shudder thinking about it.

Thank you for letting me know what the real heartstick method is, its still horrible.

We got our lovely standard poodle from Petfinder. She was left at a pound. That was in 2000, and she's our baby!

Wow! They let you take 30 dogs home???? The pound here has a lengthy application process and it's $150/dog to adopt. I notice it's cheaper to adopt in the Midwest and down South.
