Is anyone starting eggs in the incubator today? Tuesday, May 26

I figured out what zipping is now. About the time that I yelled for my husband that one had zipped, it popped out of the top part of the egg! It's still in the bottom part, but it does appear that we have one healthy little barred rock! Of our 11 eggs, the one is halfway out and 8 are pipped. Only 2 have shown no signs of hatching.

I moved my eggs into an egg carton this morning. I was bad to open the incubator, but I did it really fast. I just didn't want the eggs rolling around all over the place as they were hatching. Here is a video that I was taking with my cell phone when the first one popped out. He just popped out the top as my video was running out.

Watch the egg in the center of the light. Excuse my shakiness. I was trying to record with my phone and hold a flashlight at the same time. You can even hear it chirp at the end.

Edited to add that this chick is now out of the egg completely. While I was posting this, he came out the rest of the way. I now have my 1st newly hatched chick. It's a Barred Rock.

Oh that is just precious! There is just something wonderful about new life coming into the world. The little chirp at the end made my eyes water.

Oh thank you so much for sharing this. Them hatching is really a site isn't it? And I think we're all a bit shakey trying to multi-task like that.

I have 3 out now! Six more are hatching! It looks like 9 out of the 11 will hatch if nothing happens to them before they are out. (I also pulled out the 6 that weren't fertile during the 2nd week.) I am proud of these babies. The 3 that are out are 2 Barred Rocks and 1 RIR/White Leghorn cross. The other 6 that appear to be hatching are 1 SL Wyandotte/BR cross, 2 more RIR/Leghorn crosses, and 3 more Barred Rocks. I am so excited I can't sleep! I already woke my husband up once just after midnight to announce our 2nd and 3rd babies to hatch.

The first one is already starting to dry off and is running all over the place. He (or she) is a strong little bugger!

Husbands especially love it when we wake them just after midnight.... LOL Seriously I know your excitment & share it. & congrats you've got some new sweet babies. And isn't it amazing when they fling themselves all over the bator??? I swear THAt is something that is enough to make me come out of my skin....

ok I think I'm up to 9 chicks now it's getting tough to count in the bator with all the discard & such I don't mind saying the last hatch is hardly out of his shell & the others are pecking at him. I really don't want to open the bator but I think I'm gonna have to pull some out. How's everyone else doing with your hatches? Any more pics?

Got the final head-count on my little hatch yesterday as I got them settled into a brooder. Ended up with 98 healthy chicks. Had a 4-day old Turkey that I threw in with them and he seems to be doing fine.

You can see the Turkey in the top left, he is a Royal Palm/? cross.

Oh that is just precious.... really thank you so much for sharing this all.... & the baby turnkey is adorable...

I love fuzzy little chicks! Thanks for sharing and pointing out the turkey because I wouldn't have been able to pick him out. It won't be long and he will be towering over those other chicks! They are all so precious!!

I ended up with 9 out of 11 hatching. We had 2 with some problems. One seems to be ok now, but I had to cull one and it broke my heart. This is the first time I've had to do this, so it was sad. His little opening in his behind was turned inside out with everything hanging on the outside, including what appeared to be some of his guts or something. He was dragging them around and acting like he was in pain. We gave him some time to see if it would go inside him, but it only started drying out and smelling really bad.

Poor baby! So now I have 8 fuzzy little chicks!

I will post a picture of them later. I just got them into the brooder in the barn and it's so hot outside (around 97 degrees now) that I don't want to go back out there. We actually have a fan circulating air out there so the chicks wont get TOO hot!

We have 3 white leghorn/Rhode Island Red crosses and 5 Barred Rocks. One of our eggs was a Barred Rock/Silver Laced Wyandotte cross. I am not sure if it's one of the ones that we still have or the one we had to cull. They all look the same at this point, so it's hard to tell.

I cracked open the eggs that didn't hatch. One was pretty well-developed, so it must have just not made it to the hatch. The other appears to have stopped developing a while back and I just didn't notice it.

It has all been a learning experience for me. I think I will feel a little more confident next time. I put 3 more eggs in a few days later that a relative gave to me. They are on day 18 now, so I have got the incubator cleaned out and ready to move them over to hatch.

I'm so excited!!
I just wanted to add my chicks are hatching today!!
They are popping out very quickly, like popcorn. Alot of them are mystery eggs from a farm that didn't want the eggs they were going to throw them out! Go figure.
Some are my buff orps
