*sniff* Thank you for the kind words. It helps to share this with others who love their chickens as i do. Isn't it sweet that they all have their own sounds? i hope to be hearing her voice in my head and heart for a long time.

How nice that your dear Buffy was so loved & admired.

My coop is full of 2009 hatched bantams that I had either incubated or hand raised, so I'm close to them as you are yours. Earlier this year I came across a recipe for a natural dust bath & was delighted to use it to help avoid mites. I've painted the wood surfaces of the coop, have dusted DE (diatomaetous earth) in the bottom of each nest of pine shavings & have pvc roosts to help avoid mites. Outside the coop & in the chicken yard is a protected/roofed overhang to keep the kitty litter tray dry & in a high traffic area where the chickens (on their own) enjoy dusting & just walking thru the tray with 4" to 6" of the following homemade dust mix. I hope that this can be of help to the rest of your chickens. I guess that one of those kitty litter trays with the domed lid could be useful also. Best wishes.

NATURAL HOMEMADE CHICKEN DUST
1 part wood ash (from a friends woodstove or sometimes our outdoor wood burn)
1 part DE (diatomaetous earth)
1 part sand
1 part road dust (fine dusty dirt)

OH! I'm SO very sorry to hear you lost your dear girl!

I'm glad, though, that you had her necropsied so you know for sure what happened. That makes it a bit easier, I think. Otherwise, you will question EVERY little thing she did and you did in the last few weeks for a long time. May your girl rest in peace!

Your Buffy was gorgeous - and I feel for you. I just lost my Jane, a buff Pekin Bantam.....I think she had pneumonia - and a heart attack. She was such a sweet chicken, and I'm uncertain what her age was - probably over six years, and I'm not sure of the lifespan of a Pekin Bantam - does anybody know please?

I am busy treating all my chickens for health - garlic, apple cider vinegar (for mites and worms) as well as ginger and chilli (heart, lungs and arteries) and cod liver oil - the latter especially in the winter, when there is not much sun. Jessie (my only red shaver)is the one who showed signs of leg mites, but all the chickens are getting the "health treatment" as a routine part of their feeding.
