Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

So, when judging a Delaware, how many points are deducted for beak color? Is there a point system or something to go by? I think we have some APA judges on BYC, don't we?

ETA: I guess what I'm saying is ... should we cull for this, early on?

I would say that is one of the last things to cull for, even after leg color, unless it's way, way off, like a partially black beak or a really yellow beak. We do have some judges on here, NYReds and Dick Horstman are long time judges and I know there are others, but can't recall who.

Got a couple pics of Miss Gracie. I think she's 25 weeks and laid her first egg yesterday; it wasn't like anyone else's and a pullet egg size. Her hackles could be darker, but she's like her mom that way. Her first comb point sort of lops over a bit, but I think you'd consider it a 5 pointer-that she got from daddy Isaac, rather than mama, Kira. Was hoping Ike's influence would win out there.

YAY! Miss Gracie is laying now! That means more Dellies to hatch!

See, I really do not like these pictures by the artist. It looks to me like a Columbian ... well, anyway, close to it. She put in lots of black on the necks. Should the necks be that dark? I think not. Maybe it is just my untrained eye. (I'm sure it is!)

So, Cyn, would you consider Miss Gracie a good example? Her horn colored beek, her eye color, etc? How much color is too much on the neck, and how much is not enough?

Gracie is the very first bird hatched from Isaac and his girls. I think she has alot of great qualities, though I do think she needs more barring in her hackles. Her legs are yellow, not greenish, so that's good. I was not convinced that she would be deep bodied enough, but she has filled out a great deal as she has matured. I think she has a pretty face. Sounds weird, but some hens just don't have a nice "feminine" face. I sent pictures of her to Janet to critique and I'll let you know what she says when she answers.

As far as hackle color, the main thing is that you want barring, which, on the narrow hackle feathers really ends up looking like stippling. You don't want solid black Columbian type hackles. The lacing that two of my girls have in addition to their barring is supposedly something you will occasionally see on ones with excellent tail black, I'm told, but I'm not an expert on this breed just yet. It's the character of the color, not the degree of it, that matters most, I'd say.

Things are not looking great with my Dellie eggs. I'm down to 4 out of ten that look viable. Several look clear and at least 3 look like early quitters. As none of them have any look that they have developed any bacteria I have left them all in there. Just in case they are runty etc. I will be keeping an eye and a nose on the incubator. I just hope I do not have any more quitters, and that I don't get 4 roosters out of the bunch!

What a great thread...and it's all about my favorite breed!

I love seeing pics of so many gorgeous Dellies! Here's a few pics of mine. These pics were taken last November when they were all 6 months old. They've all changed quite a bit since then...for the better I think.

I'll start incubating and hatching eggs from them in a couple of more months. I'd love to get some feedback on their quality...so please don't hesitate, good or bad, to let me know what you think.
