Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Hi everybody, Kathy I am not sure about the reddish horn either except perhaps it is referring to the color where the beak joins the face.
If memory serves me.. it gets a bit orangy-red at the join. I will have to check when it gets lighter out.

A question I have is...I checked on all the kids from all the different batches I have and one of the batches of Dels have combs that all tilt over to the left side some. They are not straight.

Is this a cull (I am thinking that they won't straighten up) Their color is great, but I see the offset combs already.

These aren't from you Cynthia (I know you would wonder!)

If you've ever seen cow horns, that is horn color. It's almost a dull yellowish dirty white color, is how I'd describe it. The reddish part may be at the join. Here is a close up of some of my RIR ladies, since the standard say the same for them under beak color:

Could you post a picture of the combs you mean, Germaine?

Cynthia, regular horn I know, from being raised on a dairy farm- so is reddish horn that funky reddish amber color? Most horns are streaky, so is streaky OK, or are they to be solid? And is dark brown acceptable?

Rwoman, I had two with slightly tilted combs- one has straightened up, the other is getting straighter, so maybe give it some time.

I gave my little darlings warm scrambled egg this morning- and counted seconds. Slurp. Gone in 10 - guess I need to make them a larger portion.

I think we'd need someone with more experience to comment on that, Beth. I know that black or very dark on the beak is not great. For instance, one or two of my culls had an almost completely black top beak at a young age. A streak down the center of the top beak is probably not terrible and you're right, horn is rather streaky. Here is a shot where you can see Ellie's beak--that is definitely horn colored, not sure about the reddish thing. You do not want yellow.

Thanks Cynthia, and I will try to get pics today. I just noticed them yesterday. Now I am going to be checking everybodys beaks too! Poor traumatized Dels!

Thanks, Cynthia, I need to go out and look again- there are two or three with a big dark spot on the top of the beak- not sure how big it is- need to pick them up and give them the hairy eyeball!

Germaine,
Are you asking what the SOP says on the comb? Under SHAPE, it says:
MALE:
Single, moderately large, well developed, set firmly on head, perfectly straight and having five well defined points, rhose in front and rear smaller than those in center, blade smooth; inclining slightly downward, but not following contour of neck too closely.
FEMALE:
Single, moderately large, well developed, smooth in texture, firm at base, having five well defined points, those in front and rear smaller than those in center; straight and upright in front, may be straight or inclined to lop at rear.

ETA:
So, on reddish horn ... not really any reddish seen? I guess it is all a big guessing game on how one interprets it, huh?

Well, having ARTIST renditions instead of photos leaves me feeling there is a great deal left to interpretation- especially as a lot of those renditions look like cookie cutter body shapes with different feathers painted in. . . picky, picky me.

Here is my darling Buckshot - two shots of him and then two of an unnamed roo who is in the running - these are two of the three biggest. I would have more pictures, but no one felt photogenic or cooperative and I couldn't get Buckshot untangled from my hair - he wanted to stay on my shoulder.

What do you think? Sorry they aren't body shots- both are pretty plumpy - both have barred tail feathers. I also apologize for the blurriness - I think I shouldn't have bothered putting these on here- but DH did his best.
See the poo on Buckshot? I swear they sling it at each other to see who can get whom dirtiest

Kathy, I am just wondering if they will straighten out. I don't think so though because it looks like the whole group has the same thing going on.
Must be genetic. I will try to get pics, but it is freeeeeeezing out there!
