Pet Sitting Service. UPDATE LOCATIONS listed in post #1

$75 a day does seem kinda high to me too...
How many hours of work will she be doing daily? Total hours? And how far will she have to travel?

I, sometimes will take generic pics of the pets of sit for. Sometimes I use them to turn into gifts to the client. But it's also helpful should the pet ever escape, we can show the photo around to vets, etc to see if anyone saw them. I don't take pics of anyone's home...inside or out or have anything identifiable in the photo.

The sitter you interviewed should at least talk to a couple of her clients to get permission to use them as references. I've done that with a number of my clients...I've asked if ok to use them as references.

Taking pictures of the pets is a GREAT idea. How clever of you.

BTW--I have offered to be a reference for my pet sitter. I totally believe in her abilities as I've used her for so long and I have seen how she handles various situations that have come up.

These are excellent posts. I'm learning a lot.

That looks like a PART German Shepherd. Anyone else see the wolf in there????

That is part Siberian Husky and very very possibly a variety of Timberwolf. There is no GS in that dog that I see. I had 3/4 McKenzie Valley Timberwolf 1/4 Siberian Husky for 13 years...great boy but he was almost completely white/cream whereas his sister looked very similar to that dog.

In all fairness to her, she didn't really ask my permission to take pictures for anything specific. She just said that she likes to take pictures. If and only if that is the reason that she wants to take pics, she should have explained that to me and her intentions. For me, there is a process in taking pics of my property and my animals and advertising. There is an organic farmer (he is also a professional photographer) that once visited me and asked me if he could take pics of my animals to post on his organic garden website. He said that he would send the pictures to me for my approval before he posted or printed anything. He said that the pictures had to meet my approval (for privacy reasons) before he posted something that I didn't want posted. I told him that would be fine. And that is what he did. All of the pictures that he took, he emailed them to me to make sure that nothing personal was captured in the picture. After I saw the pictures and approved them, I emailed him back and told him that he could proceed with his advertisement.

Myfester, that is a great idea as far as taking pics for your clients. And I also agree about her talking to her references and getting their permission to use them as references. I never heard of that. Especially a "business"(so to speak) that cannot give me reference information. The references have to call me? And then that is giving out MY personal information.

.

This is definitely a learning experience for me.

I just called one of the local high schools that has the organization FFA (Future Farmers of America). I told them what I was looking for and the secretary said that she will give my name and number to the instructor/teacher in charge of this club. I explained to her that I am looking for a trustworthy, responsible student who is wanting to make some extra money and at the same time learning about farm living. I hope that he calls back today. I will keep everyone posted.

Just an opinion. For that many animals, two visits a day, a person who is known as dependable- It's a deal. I pay $40/day (one visit) for a very dependable person when we are away. Her job-feed and water approximately 16 beagles and 4 lofts of pigeons. No cleaning is involved due to the nature of my set-up. I feel lucky that I've found someone dependable at any price. There are too many horror stories of animals inadequately cared for during their owners' absences. It is a scarey thing entrusting the care of our animals, our passion, to a stranger. If you find a good one, treat them right and hang on to them.

Update about the call to the local high school:

The teacher that is in charge of the local high school Future Farmers of America club called me back about 6:30 pm last night. I explained to him that I was looking for a dependable, reliable and trustworthy student who could care for my animals while I was out of town. I explained that I would prefer a student that had experience with farm animals but not necessarily required. I told him that it would pay a daily rate of pay based on the person's experience. I told him what the duties were and how often. I explained to him the area where I lived being as though it was in the country area of our city. He said that he knew of a few VERY dependable, reliable and trustworthy students, one of which lived in my area. When he told me the area where the student lives, turns out the student lives 5 minutes from my house and the student has his own car.

He said that he would talk to the students to see if they were interested. I explained to him that I would like for him (the teacher) to come out and meet me, so that he could take a look at my set up so that he would be comfortable in having the student come over in addition to speaking with the student's parents for approval. I told him that I wanted him (the teacher), the parents and the students to know that I was not a crazy, lunatic serial killer because you have to be careful these days. The teacher said that he would get back with me this week to schedule a meet and greet. He thanked me for calling him about giving a student an opportunity to work, to learn and to make extra money. He said that he wished more people like myself (farmers and farm animal owners) would do the same as I did and give the high school students who have experience with working on a farm and who are choosing careers as farmers a chance to get more experience and make money as well. He was so happy that I had called him about this proposal and so was I.

So, I am planning on meeting the student and teacher this week for a walk thru. I hope that all goes well. If it turns out to be match, then I will hire the student. I have already been thinking that I could also hire this student on weekends to come out and clean my chicken coops/houses, clean waterers, clean feeders, clean nesting boxes to earn even more money. I hate cleaning the chicken coops and all the rest of the stuff that comes with it. He could make an easy $50.00 for one day at my house, to include a free lunch.

What do you all think about this idea of having the student to come out?

As a mother of FFA members (one already graduated, one in HS) I thank you also for giving these students an opportunity. I can't speak for your local chapter, but FFA as a national organization works hard to teach these young people not only about agriculture, but also service and responsibility. I am very proud of how hard our members work and how willing they are to help with about anything that is sent their way. I wish you best of luck and hope you enjoy the kids as much as I do!

I think that sounds awesome Kuntrygirl! I hope he works out for you! I know I used to work for a man on the weekends doing a similar type of thing and the money and experience was always appreciated. I learned so much from working on that farm, and I got to deal with all sorts of animals I could never own while living at home.

Good luck and keep us updated! I hope all goes well!
