Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

cpartist ,

That's well and good for the larger breeders/propagators like Don and those that have many birds to choose from. Those of us on a much smaller scale, have what we have to start with, and can hopefully breed carefully and selectively from there. Learning the proposed SOP, and watching here to see what faults and qualities are what, is very helpful to all, even the more experienced folks! Breeding selectively should apply to any breeding program, whatever breed of animal it is! Let's all learn here, and expand & share our collective knowledge by learning from ALL. There is much to learn from old breeders, and younger breeders that have happened to take serious experimental leaps and keeping of records! We can all learn from each other, newbie to pro! JMHO

Hi

Congratulations!!!

I am not sure we should cull roosters that are protecting their flocks at mating time. I know it's not a nice thing to happen but there must be a reason why they do it. I have noticed that when I only had one rooster he was fine but as I increased the number of roosters the aggression also increased. Any other thoughts on this?

Bev

Roosters have a tough job... My rooster is dog gentle....unless a hen is having her egg... then he takes up his post...It is likely that first egg was his idea of offspring... (The dingo took my baby!!!!)... (if you have seen the movie you will get the reference)

Could it be testosterone smells testosterone? As in the roo attacked her hubby and saw HIM as a threat?? I'm all alone here, no obvious signs of testosterone, and I have not been challenged yet. That said, we are a far bit away from POL, but the roo is very protective of his girls, even at his young age of 14 weeks . Maybe if hubby went and picked up and carried the roo on a regualr basis, this may help develop the alpha standing???

I myself have never had a mean Marans rooster, when I seperate them into seperate pens I catch them two-three times a week and rub the underside of the beak and wattles and give them a little over ripe banana. Was taught this many year ago when my dad had Gamefowl. Never seen a rooster that would not hit stop hitting you, try it sometime.

Hi

Thanks Don, I'll try it when the birds start mating again, at the moment they are all perfect gentlemen.

She looks beautiful to me. I love the color (even with poor pic I can tell how pretty it is). Looks like my pure Wade Jeane girls also. Until recently I thought the fact that the color went down the front of the neck and onto the upper breast was a fault or DQ because all I was seeing people post were nearly solid black hens. Now I'm learning that this type of coloring is actually preferred, if only by the judges.

Hi Ruth

Have you read the standard?

Bev

Hi Bev - yes, I've read the "Proposed" standard, many times over the past year or so - on many sites/sources. I started with the French site and the long-standing French standards and translation but that got confusing depending on whose translation you were reading and on whose site. Then I tried to just stick with the MCC site and proposed standards but somewhere in the descriptions, I just get lost. Then I come on BYC and Don and others are talking about white fluff and pinched tails and other things that I didn't remember reading in the proposed standards. I'm sure it's all there - I'm just saying that I'm having a hard time keeping up with everything and I'm learning something new every day - that's a good thing. I can't remember where I was recently reading the discussion about how much color is required, per proposed standard, in the hens neck and how far around it should go vs. what the judges prefer. I'm pretty sure it was Walt discussing same. Might have been here on this BYC thread, might have been on one of the Yahoo Marans group threads. I also know where I've read posts by him addressing all the issues (faults/dq/points off....) that are NOT addressed but should be in the proposed standard. So, at this point, maybe I've just read TOO much.

My advice here is for the layman that doesn't have a endless supply of wealth and real estate... which is what it would take to find a few birds that were near perfect standard from hatching shipped eggs... So for those of you that have ooodles of space and the ability to buy as many eggs as you need the advice may differ. It is only one person's way of doing things and it is the way I see things.. I am a short person... your view may differ.

Most of us will start with the best you have and work them against the females that are the most suited... and if you keep good records you may actually get some great looking results. It is an exciting time for us all!!!!
