d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

BBB- Are mottled d'anvers supposed to have slate/blue legs or yellow? On your website they were white?!??!?! I know that some colors have different colored legs but wasnt sure about those. Thanks, CBS

the only ones that dont have slate blue leggs are barred birds and black mottled birds. Some other mottled like millies and porcelains at time wont have them either. These genes inhibit the correct color from coming out. The millies and porcelains color often corrects this problem. Look close at the pic of Cynthias Angus, the back side of his leg and foot looks a little pale too, but for the most part they are correct on millies and porcelains.
They arent white, but a very washed out pale blue, and have mottling spots in the skin.
Will try to get a good leg shot one day when I have a minute to show the difference.

Also look at that lavender columbian I posted last night, she's barred, so hers are the same color too.

Cyn,

Those two are going to be very nice. Boy it's amazing to see how much better Aimee's mottling is now as compared to when you first started posting pics, Angus too for that matter.
That just goes back to what I was saying yesterday about having to give them time to develope their full color though. By this time next year after a full adult molt, they should be HOT!!!

And thanks for the comments on the corronation girl. Yall should see her now....will try to get some updated pics, that normal columbian hen lost all that lacing too now and is awesome as well

Aubrey, I have two different colors of quail chicks that came out of the same hatch. These are the first quail d'Anver chicks I have been around and I was just wondering which one is the closest to being right. They are three weeks old and hard to photograph so sorry for the poor pics.

The first one is lighter colored like millie chicks I ahve seen. Oh and I am pretty sure they are both roo's because their comb is wider, more red and you can see little bumps on it. They were both black with a tan face before they started feathering out.

The second one is darker and is patterned kind of like the bb red chick I hatched.

Yesterday was the photo day so here are some of my updates. I have not named anyone yet, I'm waiting to see more of the personality. Aubrey if you are still interested in getting one of the khaki, let me know. I am pretty sure now that they are both roosters, so I'm selling one of them, as well as the black rooster.
Some of the boys :

This is one of their favorite places to rest ( the dog usually lays on the other side of the fence)

They seem to be very attached to Alice (my beagle mix), and she loves to be around them as well.

This is the other favorite spot for relaxing (on the other side of the chain link fence is the dog house). The Dun pullet in the back is very beautiful but she is my wildest one. She will bite my fingers to eat the dry mealworms out of my hands, but she will never let me catch her.

This is the winter (or rain) sitting area. Last year I didn't had a very good covered area for them and the only dried part was underneath the coop, so this year they will have a nice and dried corner.

At the bottom I put two windows that I bought from Habitat for $2/piece. They have very nice had painted flowers on the corners. I decided to put the windows over there because in the winter I get a lot of sun on that fence and I figure it will be nice for them to have a warmer spot on the sand.

This is the flower box. It is surrounded by very thin netting, only strong enough to keep the chickens out. I call it the invisible net because is so thin. The chickens can't eat the flowers, and the net is so thin that doesn't obstruct the view of the flowers. Right now I have a rose over there, but next spring I'm going to replace it with something else. I made this box out of a TV stand that I bought for $3 from habitat ( that's my treasure store. Most of the decorations in the chicken run are from Habitat: the table, the chairs, the big 3 nest box use to be an old coat hanger, the mail box in the new sitting area that I just painted and after I will put a wood platform will be another nest box...)

Those little dudes are spoiled rotten looks like.

Yes I would mind getting one of them from you. I finally hatched some last week again, but only got 2 that were khakis, and only have a few more eggs from them going. So that would definately help.
Just let me know.

Beautiful set up going there. So nice to see well cared for birds and know they have gone to good homes.

Red,
It's hard for me to tell from the pics. But quail d'anvers go threw a pretty easily identifiable sex coloration just as soon as they start to feather up.
Donesnt matter what color of quail, normal, dun , blue, silver, as long as it's the quail pattern it'll be the same.

Males will get solid colored backs and breast, in your's case, a buff reddish color. Hens will have a darker brown body and black back with red to tan lacing on most of the back.

Some pullets just have larger combs. I have a buff hen who's comb is larger than her mates actually.

So, what I think you are seeing is the development of a pair. They will look totally different. But if they were both black with tan faces and cheeks, they are definately just normal quail d'anvers.

Does look like your "pullets" got a little reddish color to her shoulders which is not really right, usually a male sign. But her back is definately laced. So I'm thinking you just have a pair is all.

If you can get some still , clear pics. Post them again and I'll be happy to take a look for you.

Here's some male verses female pics to show the pattern I'm talking about
