I would bet with proper care that mare survived. Horses are darn tough. Poor things!
I'd get a very huge dog and have it trained to kill a mountain lion.

We have four dogs on the farm right now 2 black labs, a collie and a aussie so not to worried

I totally just remembered a guy across the fields has "Domesticated" Wolves....they could have escaped
Since the DNR denies the existence of mountain lions in your area, if you shoot and kill it, it's not a mountain lion so you are home free.
