Poultry Breeding and Genetics by R. D. Crawford (1990) is one I've seen mentioned a lot by folks in the know. I don't own it (yet).
Also, An Introduction to Color Forms of the Domestic Fowl by Reeder (2006).

There is a book coming out, it will be titled something like 'chicken genetics for dummies' but they wont use dummies due to trade marks and royalties and such. I will try to find the link, I saw it on the-coop.

Ok, so I dont want to sound like a tight-wad, but these books are really expensive. Like buying college textbooks! Can anyone help me discern which ones are going to be the best for a beginner in genetics?
I've been doing some reading on several websites. You might like looking at Cornell University's site on basic genetics. The price is right!! and it's a start.

How close are you to your local library? They should be able to get you books inter-library loan from all over the state. The reference librarian can do a search for you to find what's out there.
Some of these books will be non circulating, do to the nature of the book. They may only be in the reference dept. for library use only. then you would have to go there to see them. If you get a library card in your state you may also be able to request from/ or use a college library.I would think an Agricultural collage in your are might have what you are looking for.
Reference librarians can also request copies of materials for a small fee, or sometimes free.It's a start!
