I just had a chick hatch like that. It wasn't splay leg, it wasn't a slipped tendon, it was just a deformity. The leg is at least sticking down now as opposed to out to the side, but it still isn't right. The chick can get to the food and water and remain upright just fine, so maybe it will...
So far only one of mine has hatched, and it has a deformed leg. We're thinking we may have to put it down But there are eggs still wiggling and peeping in the incubator, so fingers crossed!
We taped him/her up, and he/she can at least remain upright now. There's still a lot of hobbling going on but the chick is eating and drinking okay. He/she doesn't appear to be in any pain, so I don't think it's a slipped tendon... we'll see how the night goes.
The first chick hatched looked perfectly healthy, until it tried to stand. One leg sticks out to the side at about a 90 degree angle. Is this normal from being all squished inside the egg, or is it a serious problem? Is there anything I can do to help?
I'm a newbie, so I was absolutely thrilled when I woke up to a newly hatched chick peeping One of the other eggs is wiggling and another one looks like it's starting to pip
I'm a chicken newbie, and I have an incubator with eggs of 2 different hatch dates. They're about 24 hours apart, and I'm wondering what to do about the last 3 days. Can I open the incubator for turning the late ones? What am I supposed to do about the humidity?
