She is back on the nest because she believes that the other eggs are going to hatch. The chick should be under her. Can you devise a way the chick can get to her? If not, put it back beneath the hen. :old
You need to give us more information. If the little chick is all my itself it may be calling out to others in its flock. Chicks don't like to be alone. :old
Ohhhhhh, so sorry. She was a beauty too! It seems like their "egg-makers" just have problems that you sometimes cannot fix. It's not easy seeing our hens pass on.:hugs
I have a 5 year old granddaughter that loves to throw scratch for the hens and, like your daughter, to collect eggs. There is something fascinating about running to the nest boxes, opening the lid, and as if by magic the egg appears!
I can't get rid of my hens ever. What would the grandchildren...
Hi and Welcome! :frow With 6 RIRs, you'll have lots of eggs! I'm always looking for recipes to use my excess eggs. Custard and frittata are my favorites.
Wondering where you are located......I'm on the West Coast.
Wishing you the best with your flock. Maybe your little girl will be able to help...
Welcome to this very helpful website. I got six pullets last summer and we have more eggs than we can use. I've made lots of egg custard, frittata, egg salad sandwiches, and baked any recipe I can find that calls for at least two eggs! I hope you have such good luck and put all those eggs you'll...
Could she be a mix? Her legs look like an Easter Egger. I'm sure you would have mentioned if she lays colored eggs. What color are her eggs?
I'd try getting her on layer feed as soon as possible. We've always switched food a few weeks before they were predicted to begin laying.
As far as getting her into the nest, put in a fake egg or golf ball to give her an idea. Try coaxing her with some bread crumbs or treat to get into the...
It sounds like you are doing just about everything you can for her. We'll be thinking of you in your efforts to save this little chick and wishing you the best!:fl
We've had some great hens over the past years. The best layers for our "Backyard Hens" have been Barred Rocks and RIR's. They've been good pets too. Our tamest hens have been the Buff Orpingtons. Most entertaining is the Favorelle, Dark Brahma and Delaware. I had problems with temperament of the...
Wellcome to BYC! I love Buff Orpingtons! Really sweet and tame. I'm not good at guessing the gender without seeing how long the legs are. To me roosters always look taller, with a ruffle of coarser feathers around their neck. I don't see that on this one! Good luck! :fl
You should check your other hens also and treat your roost with a poultry insecticide. If one hen has them, usually the other members of the flock have them. You can cure this. :fl
The above works. We have six hens with two boxes and they usually prefer the same box where they have found a previous hen has left her egg. They will also sometimes get into a box with another hen and spend some quality time with the other layer while getting down to business. I have a camera...
