    Howdy, from Tillman's Corner!

Until two years ago we had a nice little flock of aging, but productive, hens. Eventually they all passed on. Since then my health went a bit south and an enormous portion of an oak tree fell and crushed my chicken coup/tractor. (I liked that thing!) Anyhow, I feel it's time to get back...

    What is this chicken thinking?

"See? I told you that air conditioning is wonderful. Now, one of you, lay me an egg!"

White Crested Polish Pullets? Or is one a Roo?

How heat tolerant are these birds?

    Blending Flocks

I have six red sex links that are approx. 2 1/2 years old. I also have another small flock of six consisting of two cuckoo(sp?) marans, two buff orpingtons, and a single americanus & white silkie that are about 2 1/2 months old. When & how do I begin to integrate the flocks?

Couldn't ask for better starter birds, but you need to keep an eye out for predators as they have practically NO survival skills. Whikle their life span is less than other birds, they lay vast numbers of huge brown eggs.

    Injured Bird

My son was attempting to place the birds back in their coop when one hen went rogue. In the chase she 'zigged' just as he 'zagged' and they collided. She seemed fine at the time but this morning she was standing on one leg. I checked her feet, legs and joints up to the hips and could find no...

    ALABAMA!!

If anyone has Silkies in the future I'd love to buy a couple. We are in Tillman's Corner and have six beautiful - and extremely productive - red sex link hens in a custom-built chicken tractor. Over the winter they turned my back yard into a scratched-up checkerboard made up of eight-foot...

Returning a hen to the flock...

A while back we had a hen manage to scratch & squeeze her way out of the tractor where our Spaniel got to her. She had some plucked areas and a couple of areas of torn skin . She is well on her way back to 100%. We attempted to re-introduce her back to her old flock friends, but within...

    When Cocker Spaniels Attack!

Well, it was one Cocker, not multiples, and only one of my beloved hens and not all six. One of my Great Danes was out as well, but he has no interest in the birds. Apparently, one of my red sex link hens scratched her way out of the tractor at a low spot along the low rail, then tried to get...

Whats the weirdest thing your chickens have eaten or tried to eat??

Our girls get a fresh 8x8 foot section of yard every other day. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING in that section of yard is safe. Any mole traveling just under the surface is in for a very bad day! One our girls is a lazy sod, though, & would rather ride on the tortoise than walk...

    Chicken Tractor Ground Gap Solution

With many of the chicken tractor designs, including my own (Highly Vented Chicken Tractor). a gap is formed between the bottom board and the ground due to the rise of the wheels. If the yard is flat and smooth then this can be kept to a minimum by the wheel placement. However, if your yard...

I, too, have been considering using PVC as a material. You've given me some good ideas!

The Danes haven't bothered the chickens at all. Perhaps because our Shih Tzu guards them like they are her pups! The ticking is the old fashioned feather-proof variety. It isn't used as insulation, but as a guard against water getting in where the side is hinged near the top. You can see the...
