I would look at the Great Pyrenees. We have a wonderful dog, half Great Pyrenees half Anatolian Shepard, who guards our chickens and she is great with our children. Very sweet and loving dog.
Hello, everyone. I have a question about chicken feed. A friend of mine bought some feed for her layers, it was the Lone Star brand. She noticed the eggs weren't hard, they were sort of rubbery. She went to a different feed store and asked if they had any idea what was going on and they told her...
Hi, Louisiana peeps. I'm in Youngsville, waiting for the tropical storm that's headed this way. For those of you who are in the storm's path, what are you doing to protect your chickens? I have 7 hens and they only really go into their coop to lay. They prefer to roost on the roof. My question...
If I could trust my girls to leave my cucumbers and cantalope alone, I'd put them in the garden. There are tons of grasshoppers, roly polys and all kinds of bugs!
My girls love grapes, cooked rice, the wormy tomatoes from my garden, and I've noticed they've been stealing the blackberries from my bushes. Only the ones they can reach, though. Apparently, they are bad influences on my dog because we've caught her eating them, too!
Hi, I'm in Youngsville. I haven't really kept up too much myself, but a friend of mine is in Coteau Holmes. She's been getting reports from a Homeland Security site for the St. Martinville area on FaceBook! If you do FB you could try to search for it on there. Also, KATC has been pretty good at...
I forgot to mention that I am in Youngsville, La and we have 3 Long Island Reds and 3 Barred Rocks and if everything works out well, we will be adding more.
Boy, do I have ALOT to learn! We had some chicks given to us last year, you know, those adorable dyed chicks for Easter that nobody expects to live very long? Well, they lived and we were so excited to think that we had a hen and would walk all over the yard waiting to see an egg! Ha! Somebody...
Mais, hello! I just stumbled across this thread and thought I'd jump in. I'm a newbi to this site, I'm in Youngsville, La. I have 6 Leghorn roosters and 1 poor little red hen. They were Easter chicks and the kids got all attached to them so we kept them when it was obvious that they were going...
Hi, this link may help.

We have a Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepard and she is so loving and protective. if you can't find anything in the link I sent, then maybe check out your local Animal Rescue foundation. Good luck!
Well, I was wondering about that, but they are still on the Starter feed. We are transitioning over to the next feed as soon as the bin is empty. They also free range.
They are probably getting enough to eat on their own. My kids like to go out every night to catch June bugs in jars for out chickens. The scatter the bugs on the ground in the morning and get a kick out of watching the chickens go after them.
Our chickens live in the side yard with our dog. As soon as we open the coop to let them out in the mornings, the roosters go straight for the dog's food bowl and eat her food. The dog doesn't seem to mind, but I'm just wondering if it is OK.
