Checked out the panic room advice. Love it. My brooder has an enclosure on the bottom I used to let babies get on the ground while being protected. I think I'll make a small door at the bottom for her to escape to if needed when I let her into the big run. My big coop and brooder both go into my...
Yes I have one hen and one rooster. My flock has dwindled down due to predictor issues. Working hard to get that resolved. She has been around my flock with her mother. The roo has somewhat accepted her but now that I separated her I figured she'd need to stay in the brooder a few days so he...
I have a chick that was recently orphaned. It will be 6 weeks old Thursday. Its mama was killed last week whole they were out free ranging. I brought the baby inside temporarily to recover from the trauma of losing its mother. It has done well inside but I can tell it would be happier back in...
The mama hen to my 5 week old chick was killed today. I don't know what killed it. The baby was hid in the woods under a pile of leaves. I got it and brought it inside and made it a temporary brooder. Now the poor baby is all alone. I feel terrible. I know it's too small to put back in with my...
Yes the wait is killing me! I only had one hatch hoping for a girl. This is my first hatch. I'm busting to know if it's a girl or boy. It's a Rhode Island red crossed with a buckeye. So far it appears to have the buckeye comb. Can't wait to see it fully feathered. It's super shy and stays close...
My roo has never seen a chick. He's less than a year old. He's been a good rooster so far. He's got a good temperment. I will try introducing them again and see how it goes. Hopefully he'll come around and protect the baby as well as he protects his girls. He's never shown aggression toward me...
Thanks! I don't know why he acted like that. He's a good rooster. Very friendly and takes good care of his hens. I think I will try to let them all out to free range this weekend when I can moniter them and see how it goes. The Hens all acted fine. But my roo was not so nice.
My little peep is now 3 weeks old. I was wondering when would be a good time to let it start meeting the rest of the flock? It has lived in the brooder with mom and can be seen by my other chickens. I tried to introduce them when he was a few days old and my roo was very mean to him. I know some...
She nested in the big coop where she could be seen by whole flock. When baby hatched i moved her to brooder. The brooder is where the whole flock can see mama and baby when in the pen. The roo gave mama a peck also and she fluffed all up tryin to protect her baby. It all happened so fast and I...
Yes I'm still fairly new to raising chickens. I grew up with them and have always loved them. Started our first coop last spring. My roo is less than a year old. He's never been around bitties before. He's a buckeye and and excellent care taker to his hens. He protects them with all he has...
That's my plan. I will let the big Kids free range and keep the pen closed if mom and baby want to have some room to explore. Safe and controlled. At least til lil peep is older. I'm so happy to have it. I sure don't want to risk losing it.
